Routes / Solo Route 66, east to west, spring 2022 - any unusual concerns?
« on: December 04, 2021, 12:16:21 pm »
I want to do this from Chicago to Santa Monica starting in mid-April.

My wife is really concerned about my ability to find service in the less-populated desert areas.

Anyone have an opinion on this, or recent experiences?

Thanks,
Shaun

Routes / Route 66 westbound in 2021 - bad idea?
« on: January 17, 2021, 01:02:16 am »
I can't stop thinking about Route 66.

I did a solo self-supported TransAm in 2019, and I was planning to take it easy in 2020 and do some fun things with my wife, but the pandemic kept us homebound.

I have been in wait-and-see mode this year, but it looks increasingly likely that the pandemic won't subside until it is too late for international travel with my wife.

So I started thinking about an east-to-west Route 66 on the ACA route.

I can think of a few reasons why this might not be a good idea - mainly the fact that some essential stops might be closed, especially in the desert.

But I was curious what others think?

I created a RWGPS route that uses the Great Rivers South route to get around Chester. Any feedback?

Thanks for your help!

Yeah, I am headed west, and I've heard about the headwinds.

I am sure there will be days I regret my decision, but there are some big positives too.

I'll consider the detour approach, but I really want to do the entire TransAm, and I am a little OCD about it.  It's a childhood dream!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I looked at that section of dirt road, and it looks pretty good.  Totally doable on 26" x 1.5" touring tires.  I suppose it could be a muddy mess if it is raining, but this is an optional side-trip!

Highway 522 looks sketchy, but there aren't really any practical alternatives.

I am from Taos, NM originally, and I do speak Spanish, but it is still possible to get in trouble.

I am doing the TransAm this summer, but want to also do a side trip to Taos, NM.

It's important for me to do this as an out-and-back, so I don't want a course change.

After looking at the map, it looks like the best place to jump off the TransAm is Pueblo, CO.

I created a route from Pueblo to Taos that looks reasonable, but requires almost 40 miles of riding on I-25.

I confirmed this section of I-25 is legal for bicycles, using this site: http://dtdapps.coloradodot.info/bike#legend

And, using Google Street View, it looks safe (nice wide shoulders, clear lines of sight, etc.).

Does anyone have any strong concerns about this route?

This is the route I created by merging routes 1 and 76:

I am starting to plan an east-west TransAmerica solo tour, and I was wondering if anyone can help recommend a route for riding from Union Station in Washington, DC to Yorktown?

Using rwgps' default routing, I came up with this: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29063975

I looked at a few of the roads with Google street view, and they look both busy and narrow, so I am hoping there are some better alternatives.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Shaun
