General Discussion / Re: eBikes for touring
« on: July 30, 2020, 11:20:42 am »
As promised here is a small update on the e-assist conversion of my wife’s Rivendell. We added a battery (29ah) and crank set all of which weighed in at about 22lbs. Rode 54 miles with 1,850 elevation gain in 5 hours. Only used the easiest as assist on hills. It appeared the battery was about 95% spent when we were done.

I am not sure if this is helpful.  we are just learning but this gave us an indication that a 60 mile day trail is a doable. Planning to do Albany to Buffalo in August.

Thanks for the information canalligators - that is very helpful. I guess I'll leave the tent/sleeping pads, bags, & cooking gear home and force myself to air-conditioned, clean, rooms. Such are the sacrifices we need to make in a pandemic  ;)

Thank you both. Coming from Connecticut so should be okay. That forum is very helpful and I had not found that. Have the tour book too. Looks doable and i see at least some lodging is open.

We are hoping so.... just took my wife's bike (Rivendell Betty Foy) into a shop to be converted to an e-assist ride. Tech is telling me it will be a good option for 40 - 50 miles/day with assist only. Will give you all a review in a month.

General Discussion / Erie Canal Trail in 2020

I am looking at riding the Erie Canal Trail in mid-August. Anyone have information on lodging, camping, restaurants? Will it work do you think? Going Albany to Buffalo. Will either ride back, Amtrak back, or convince a friend to pick us up.

Any updated information you have would be appreciated.

Routes / Re: 30 Days in June/July from DC..

I agree, I am thinking about doing the TA to West Yellowstone, then picking up the PPP and then the North Lakes and Erie connector and somehow cross NY State (Erie Canal Trail) to finish in Boston rather than Bar Harbor. Am I a bit nuts to piece so many routes together like that?

Has anyone done the PPP yet? Looks like a great route!

That is a great point. I have been looking at either the Erie canal trail, Buffalo to Albany, or, the coast of Maine. Haven’t thought about the need to check ahead on tent camping.

I hear you! I'll be 64 next year, and want to do this NOW!, so, 2021 it is assuming virus is slain and the world still stands.

Others?

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if I am the only one who's looking at 2021 to cross the US? How many of you have postponed your cross country or TA tour to 2021? I am thinking it will be a good year to meet others, assuming we are done with this pandemic by then!!

Thoughts?
