General Discussion / carbon road bikes with a trailer???
« on: November 18, 2007, 02:28:26 pm »
Depends a lot, I should think, on which parts are carbon and what
generation of technology you have on your bikes. The Burley grabs the
chainstays, does it not? The BOB uses a skewer on the rear dropouts.
They will put tremendous torque and moment on those areas.

but here's the thing: Your carbon road bikes are designed to do
something completely different than tour and they certainly weren't
made to pull trailers. Your carbon bike weighs several pounds less than
a utilitarian steel machine designed specifically for touring. But if you
put a trailer on your carbon bike, the weight savings are meaningless
considering the entire package (you, trailer, contents, bike).

Hope you enjoy your stay in our country.
Consider staying a bit longer, into September, and hooking up with Cycle
Oregon. Another $1,000 for a week of pampered touring in the
mountains of Oregon.

General Discussion / Mosquitoes repellents?
« on: November 18, 2007, 02:35:02 pm »
> I really don't like using DEET based repellents.

Here in Iderho, we have the highest per capita West Nile
infection/death rates in the States. It ain't funny anymore. You use
what works. DEET works. The alternatives are all of questionable value
in this scenario.

Visit other resources online for a different point of view like fly fishing
shops.

You can also look for high-zoot clothing with "bug repel" qualities. The
jury is still out on that stuff and it's really expensive.

General Discussion / Which Touring Tires?

Specialized Armadillo. I get 1500-2500 miles out of mine.
A tire alone cannot protect against puncture flats.

hit any backpacking or well-stocked outdoor store or Borders/Barnes
and Noble. You will find perhaps a dozen cooking books aimed at
backpackers.

The "Roughing It Easy" series comes to mind. Check your local library.

Also visit backpacker magazine's Web site for hundreds of single-
burner recipes.

Oops, maybe not. Had to look up "GDT."

General Discussion / Seeing in the rain
« on: June 17, 2007, 11:30:30 am »
Look for a cheap pair of ski goggles at REI or end of season closeouts.
Only adds about 3 ounces.

Carrying rain gear on a tour is a list of tough decisions. What must you
have for safety and health? What's just for comfort? Do you like to ride
in heavy rainfall or wait it out? Where are you touring and what's the
likelihood you're going to see big rain?

General Discussion / Cycling on the Cheap . How low can you go?
« on: July 04, 2007, 12:52:56 am »
>I would like the stories to get out there so others know you don't
have to chose between paying the rent and going on a bike trip .<

You can spend several hours researching ultralight backpacking
techniques, equipment and food suggestions. Just google the terms
and start following links.

When I was backpacking, I went form a 45-50 pound pack (not
including water or food) to less that 20 pounds. I was warm, dry and
comfortable but ultralight gear requires some extra care. It is NOT
bombproof. Ultralight is not for everyone. I got most of my stuyff at
WalMart except the silicon-nylon tarp.

Two interesting sidelights of going light:
1. You don't have much stuff to lose so setting up and tearing down
camp takes only a few minutes
2. Because camp is so simple, going stealth is actually possible. The
biggest thing to hide is your bike.

« on: July 04, 2007, 12:35:04 am »
> Great topic. I'm heading out on my first tour this summer. ~4000
miles, ~62 days. I'll be completely self-supported, plan on stealth or
gypsy camping every night, and plan on eating as cheap as possible.
My hope is to spend about $15 day on food. Is this possible? (eating on
fifteen bucks a day, I mean) <

Dude, how did the trip go? How did your food budget hold out?

General Discussion / Biking Shorts

Bakc when I needed such specialized gear (I'm on a
recumbnet now) I wore these exclusively:
Cannondale.
Castelli.
Pearl.

These cost as much as twice almost every brand on the market and my
butt was ever grateful for the extra attention in the seaming and gel
placement.

"Chamois Butter" is an excellent product if you can tolerate lanolin. It is
petroleum-free.
