Gear Talk / self sealing innertubes
« on: May 21, 2007, 10:45:35 am »
Hey Big Ringer,

Uhm I wouold never buy tubes with any self-sealent in them...Just on general principle. Too many things go wrong with them, they are normally expensive and I remember back when they were the 'rave' all my mountain bike buddies had them and I seem to recall that they were more trouble than worth . Just my 2-bits. If it matters, buy the tire inserts.. Mr.Tuffy was one I think? They worked for me when I rode mountain in the plains of Texas where you have constant thorns and such.

Gear Talk / goggles?
« on: May 04, 2007, 12:17:44 pm »
For what it is worth, never use goggles. Reasons are to many to list and obvious. Stick to sunglasses. I never buy 'cycling' glasses...you can find good cycling glasses of any shade and type in any massive retail store. Buy the type that fits close and hug your face..make sure they are comftorable. I have the yellow tint glasses, I don't care to know the real nomeclature who cares really. But I use a shade that softens the blazing sun and still gives me road detail so I can see road anomalies. IMHO you waste massive amounts of money buying 300.00 pair of glasses that are't worth a poop. I raced for over 12 years...was handed glasses by sponsers countless times that I literally THREW away after a race because they were worthless, and bought a 10.00 dollar pair of real sunglasses that suited my needs for racing, touring is similar so use your judgement. That's all I got.

Gear Talk / Rack and Panniers for T2000?
« on: May 08, 2007, 12:33:25 pm »
Russel.
Actually unless I am mistaken I have already decied to purchase a clip-on pannier...not really a panier but it is like a book rack. I will buy a water-pfroof bike bag and attach it to the rack:

Since you are obviously curious with my plan here is what I will carry:

Ultra-lite bag and tent.

three pairs of cycling socks.

two comeplete jersy and bib short.

two pairs of shorts and t-shirts.

pair of crocs.

med kit.

cellphone.

two water bottles

two tubes, two tires

spare chain.

road tool.

Map-set.

GPS.

As for anything else? I will carry a card with enough cash to spend frugally. I plan on riding six-days on one off, on my off day perhaps a cheap ass motel for shower and complete day of rest, some beer and food.

Cliff and candy bars i can carry on my person.

I have done  commuting for many years and have used many things to carry crap on my bike. I am convinced this is my best idea and my best theory. Others can do whatever they feel is smart and if I fail, then people 'told me so'! LOL.

Gear Talk / Rack and Panniers for T2000?
« on: May 04, 2007, 11:32:16 am »
Stupid question about panners...

So I am invested in a Giant road racing bike, It's what I am used to (Racing for most of my adult life) And it is what I have and really not able to throw down a ton of cash for a touring bike and still make the august Trans I want to do. My question is:

I am planning to pack light, are there panners that fit racing bikes that do not have the fuixtures ...anyone?

Yeah, I am very excited. I am deciding to do it all self contained and as little as possible carry-on. I am eating right and training...not much training is needed as you know I raced for a zillion years...so mainly it will be preparing mentally and disciplining myself to wake up each day and put roghly 80-100 miles on my bike in a reasonable amount of time. I am taking much of your advice and really and honestly appreciate it. Back in the day, whenever the people I raced against or with would say "You're the man" that usually meant that because of your results other racers and new racers would watch your style and listen to anything you said and always considered YOU the treat in the pack. SO as far as touring goes, YOU're the man or one of them anyway. So GPS for sure, and of course all the downloading that goes along with it. 200.$ is steeep!!!!! but I'll do it anyway because it will pay-off in the long run. I am debating taking a mess-kit at all and the food thing is bothering me. I don't want to spend tons of money or carry tons of stuff. So if you have ideas on  nutrition you used then share it wioth me PM style or e-mail me Paul. I consider you pretty much an expert thus far so anything you say may be very helpful.
I do know one thing, when I hit my 60's I hope I am still riding steel like you.
