We rode the Katy Trail and are in Boonville now. Will head north and west on roads from here.

Thanks, guys. Traffic with a shoulder I can deal with. Traffic and no shoulder is too dangerous, and VERY slow trying to be safe(r).

Just rode part of Eastern Express (Cloverdale, IN, to Marshall, IL). US40 once we crossed into IL has NO paved shoulder, just 3 ft of large gravel, and LOTS of traffic/semis going 55+, one lane each direction so no place to move if oncoming traffic. I have reported it to ACA route feedback.

General Discussion / How much water to carry?

My husband and I will be riding EE to TA May-July. We will each have 2 large water bottles, a large Gatorade bottle, and a 4 liter HydraPak to use for more remote areas.
How much water capacity do others who have ridden these areas recommend?

Good idea! We rode from Austin & did a loop. Lovely except for in-near Austin. Look at the ACA supported group tours as they have one this year (2024) that starts & ends in Fredericksburg, skips Austin, & gives daily itineraries.

Thanks so much, Jama! We’re very experienced cyclists, & comfortable dealing with traffic. We have flags, bright clothes, watch our rear-view mirrors, & agree that pulling off is sometimes the best option.
We are starting from home in Ohio in May & heading west, hope to do 60-ish miles/day based on location of overnights. Figure we will end the second week of July.

If you’ve cycled this Hwy 126 in Oregon on the ACA TransAm, does his experience of no shoulder and logging trucks not moving over ring true?
Also ACA route info says the McKenzie highway is normally closed November until July. Is this accurate? How have cyclists managed—detour? Ride later into summer heat?

General Discussion / Re: Documenting my maiden TransAm voyage - Suggestions?

Hi Neil- My husband and I rode 1001 miles last fall frim Ohio to the East coast (Norfolk, VA). We stopped frequently & I took pix w my iPhone, then at the end of the day, I wrote my days’ journal on Notes on my phone, & then uploaded the journal, selected pix & captions on CrazyGuyOnABike. Friends & family enjoyed the daily updates, & it kept a record of what we saw when, & various musings. I had poor wifi in Harpers Ferry, WV, & a relative was worried when I didn’t post until next am! But many friends told us how much they enjoyed following our day-to-day. I didn’t post on Facebook partially from a security standpoint, telling the world we’re not home for a prolonged trip.
I dl’d the journal pages as pdf’s in Dropbox after the ride to save a backup copy.

We rode it in April. We left our car (we didn't fly there) with one of the long-term parking companies near the airport and got a Uber back to our hotel, just west of the airport; all of the roads right around are not bike friendly. The path was looked like a long way to go our hotel, and the immediate roads are like interstate highways.
We went south-west the next morning and most of the roads were ok, but we used sidewalks for some sections because of traffic, or the bike paths were over grown.
The next morning from San Marcos (motel off route a few miles)/ Hunter was busy with trucks, as mentioned on the ACA map. We use rear-view mirrors and the cars and trucks were 99% fine, but I have a moderately high tolerance. Probably NOT ok for some. We rode with flashing lights and orange safety flags everyday.
The other days were fine:not 100%, there is always the busy intersection, etc., or driver passing a little close. I do wonder, in the areas near the rivers/ cottages, have heavy traffic in the summer. Those areas were mostly quiet for us.
Getting back into Austin at the north was again very busy. We pulled off to the side a couple of times so trucks could pass, as there was no shoulder. We again got on the sidewalks as soon as we could. On a several mile stretch on the sidewalks we saw one person walking, 2 people on electric scooters, 2 people on skateboards and 3 or so on bikes. So we stayed on the sidewalk until there was a bike lane.
We didn't go to TX to ride in the big city, and we stopped in the northern part of Austin (planned) for the night. Austin has many bike paths, but getting to the airport isn't relaxing, as first mentioned, so we got an Uber and got our car.
Riding close/ in Austin is not horrible, just busy.
