General Discussion / Re: Advice on likely my last bike
« on: February 12, 2024, 06:08:44 pm »
Hello,
I 63, my wife 55 and we have been using Bridge Club for 2.5 years. We have done 15,000 km and are happy.

Wheels 700x40 with Schwalbe Marathon Plus for asphalt routes (Pacific Coast, San Lorenzo River, Milan-Rome, Alps) 12,000 km never a puncture.
Wheels 27.5x2.3 with Teravail for mixed routes and mostly dirt (Carretera Austral and Tierra del Fuego). 2,500 km one puncture. :-X >:(

Defect of the Bridge Club is that if you want 700c wheels you can't put on "wide" tires.

Butterfly handlebars

Today, if I will chage, I would buy Surly Ogre with Rohloff or Tumbleweed Prospector with Rohloff

@John

I think that for us is the better choice, only one flight, start with flat roads and we can go back home by bicycle.
If you want to send me your routes, it's perfect. Do you want my email in private?

@davidbonn
Good suggestion (and I prefer the West coast to the East coast), but if we stay in the East the logistics is easier for us.

@John
In your first answer, you wrote: The central highlands of Mexico is good too temp wise.
What do you Americans think about safety in Mexico outside Baja California?

@John Nettles
 :-[

Last night my wife suggested: Flight to Miami, to ride until Key West, ferry to Fort Meyers then North until home. A bike photo in Washington DC and NYC would be cool. From NY to Montreal there is the Empire State Trail.
What do you say to that? Do you know the route?

And what do you think about El paso - Calgary? The great divide South - North but only paved.

The best is between 65F and 85F, but last year I rode the Souther Tier and the Carretera Austral with some day over 100F

General Discussion / Help for ideas wanted
« on: February 08, 2024, 04:15:48 pm »
Hello,
For 2024 We are stuck at home and we have only one month (+/-) available. We have no ideas to go in a WOW place  :-\ without changing continents. We have already done the Pacific Coast, the Southern Tier, Quebec-New Brunswic provinces, Atlantic Province of Canada, road biking in Moab (UT) and a few passes in Colorado.

What do you suggest? I think Baja California is too hot.

Living in Canada, no biking in winter, we would like to leave April 1st, so very little training.
The only idea I have is to fly to Denver (CO), direction Salt Lake City along IS-80 and back to Denver from the South US. Google Maps suggests this as the basic idea.
Variants along the way.

Others good ideas? I don't like snakes, so nothing in Florida. Carolina and neighboring states are too similar to Quebec.

 Hi,
@dkoloko: Thank you for suggestions about the itinerary.
@bikeliciousbabe: The days are shorter but doing about 65-70 miles each day we will have time also to relax. I have already planned to sleep in hotel. No problem for the cold…we are Canadians 😊

Routes / Suggestions for NY
« on: November 01, 2022, 05:12:11 pm »
Hello,

I'm planning about 10 days in NY state before end of November. My idea is Albany - NYC - Albany
From Albany to NYC I find the "Empire State Trail" and after I would like to cross Long Island, take a ferry to New London and go back to Albany.

It's a good idea?

Thank you for suggestions

General Discussion / Re: Tents and panniers
« on: July 13, 2022, 12:27:14 pm »
Hello,
We are a couple, and we have three persons tent MSR Mutha Hubba, because during a long trip, we think a minimum of space is appreciable. The difference of weight between 2 and 3 persons lightweight tent is the same of a T-Shirt.
We prefer to have our baggage in the tent, primarily for comfort and practicality. For example, if during the night it’s raining and you forgot something in the paniers?
About the “kitchen” we use two stoves: MSR Pocket Rocket (2.6 oz) where is easy to find propane or MSR Whisperlite where we can’t find it. For us it’s a good choice.

Hello,
We are planning to start the Pacific Coast in Vancouver, BC next August. Do you have a suggestion for an hotel not too expensive and not too far from the airport ?

Hello,
Thanks to all!
I would like to leave the second week of August from Seattle or Vancouver, I was a little afraid of the high temperatures, but with @John's answer I am more reassured.
