great! I knew  Brewster (Putnam Trailway) and in Westchester county to NYC there are developed (paved) trails - however there is that section from Hopewel Jct. Dutchess county to Brewster (Putnam) area (Maybrook Trailway) that has yet to be built

Another option (cheating?) is to avoid the roads and take the Putnam/North County/South County trailways

interesting option - however you are a few years too soon - as part of the Empire State Trail - from Hopewell Jct. (south end of the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess RT) an un-paved rail-with-trail (along the MTA Metro North RR Maybrook/Beacon line) is to be built to connect to the above and ultimately connections to other trails to NYC - and so one could from the WOTH (Hudson Valley Trail Network) ride south-east on the WRS DRT to the Maybrook rail-with-trail and the Putnam Trailway etc. etc. etc. to NYC - but... not yet as of 2018

the Atlantic Coast Route enters NY and the Hudson Valley at Millerton - the NEW 2017 revised version of the ACR then uses the entire (currently) Harlem Valley RT then NY SR 22 to NY SR 343 to Mabetsville then a county road past the wineries to the village/town of Hyde Park THEN.. uses NY SR 9G - I should explain/point out that there are several 'route 9s' in this region of NY and so might be a bit confusing - all of the 'route 9s' are north-south highways - the 2 main corridor route 9s (heavy traffic volumes) are US route 9 on this side of the Hudson river(east) and US route 9W on the west side (thus the W)

I would recommend following the (2017 ver) ACR to Poughkeepsie (city) - in Poughkeepsie SR 9G takes you to the east entrance of the Walkway OTH on Parker Ave. - instead of going across the WOTH and then US rt 9w south (could ride to the (new) west end Ulster Welcome center then back to the east entrance - Dutchess county) should follow NY SBR9 - continue on Parker Ave. to Washington then left and right to Verrazano Blvd. - there is a SBR 9 sign - follow through the (city) of Poughkeepsie on Hooker Ave. - Hooker Ave. becomes NY SR 376 in the town of Poughkeepsie (there are 2 Poughkeepsies) to Red Oaks Mill there is lodging here > the Best Western the Inn at The Falls - follow NY SBR 9 into the village of Wappingers Falls THEN CONTINUE on SR 9D - to I 84 and Beacon here you will  pick up SBR 17 but will continue on SR 9D - there is a much lower traffic volume but inadequate shoulder - at Cold Spring will pick up SBR9 - then across the Bear Mtn. bridge etc. continuing to NYC

as an option - could 'cheat' and at the Poughkeepsie train station purchase a $5.00 (permanent) bike permit for the MTA Metro North RR and take the train to NYC

the Walkway Over The Hudson SP Ulster Welcome Center (official term for what I call 'visitor center') opened June 29th - no construction barriers etc.
however - construction of the Dutchess Welcome center (east end) is still underway - cyclists must dismount and walk through the construction zone

construction of the phs 3 and 4 extensions for the Hudson Valley RT is still ongoing - phase 4 is progressing ahead of phase 3 - there is asphalt on the phs 4 section - most likely the 'base' layer of asphalt? as of 07-13-18

both extensions are to be completed by late Fall - I will send update for the ACR at that time

of note: the Walkway OTH and the Hud Val RT are part of the Empire State Trail (see photos)

at the literal high point of my 1989 "Rocky Mountain High" tour (road) I rode Trail Ridge Rd. in Rocky Mtn. Nat. Park - prior to RMNP I rode up to Hoosier Pass on the ACA Trans Am route - when doing the climb on TR rd. I stopped for an 'air break' I would like hyperventilate doing heavy breathing like a woman giving birth - also you should be prepared for cold - icy conditions  - my RMH tour was in mid July and at the alpine visitor's center in RM NP it was 42 deg - my eyes were seeing snow and ice and my skin felt cold but my brain told me it was mid July - you will have to dress for early spring in NJ for the climb then at the valley say 8,00 feet will have to take off heavy cold weather gear - at Estes Park it was like 75 deg

PS: I used to live in NJ - for a practice long uphill climb I suggest riding SR 23 to NJ High Point SP

RE: BikeliciousBabe

interesting comments - RE: Deep Hollow Rd. - yes this is a nice road albeit a Mid Hudson Valley Hill From Hell - the reason I did not recommend this road is the very steep grade - the up-hill is one thing but the DOWN-hill could be dicey with a fully loaded touring bike - I speak with experience - about 30 years ago I attended a bike rally at SUNY New Paltz and on one of the day rides to Mohonk Mtn. House I rode the carriage trail UP to Smilely twr I had 27 X 1-3/8ths tires, the uphill was OK with the triple gearing on my bike BUT I had trouble on the very steep sections of the DOWN hill - the bike kept skidding

RE:the WVRT yes indeed it is more like a mtn. bike trail than a developed (and paved) multi use trail - the south section is actually not that bad when compared to the section north of Rosendale and Williams Lk. I think the issue for Ulster CR 7 is that left turn across NY state rt 299 out of New Paltz to get onto the county road which could now be a paved alternative route - to believe it or not, the WVRT north from New Paltz will be a part of the Empire State 'Trail' (I use quotes because some of this 'trail' will be a bike route on state and other roads)

RE: SR 9G - yes much nicer than the 4 lane US rt 9 - did you see Rita's Ice Cream? I think it is still there at Haviland Rd. (haven't gotten up there yet - have been going to the Frozen Caboose in Highland Ulster County near the Hud Val RT) - 9G also allows one to visit the OTHER Roosevelt place  - Val Kill Eleanor and from there could ride as an alternative side route the un-paved (but much nicer ride than the WVRT) Farm Lane trail to US rt9 - and the FDR home etc. also the Hyde Park Brewery - lodging, and a chain supermarket Stop&Shop - could go back to rt 9G via the Farm Lane Trail

PS: construction of the extensions to the (paved) Hudson Valley RT is well under-way

NOTICES and  UPDATES
RE:  ACR sec 2 Hudson Valley NY

of note: the Hudson Valley Trail Network - Maybrook rail corridor (Wiliam R Steinhaus Dutchess RT,Walkway Over The Hudson,Hudson Valley RT) will be part of the Empire State Trail

I had thought with all the construction, updates etc. that I should put it all in one post. The Walkway OTH, with construction of the visitor centers at both ends, now resembles a L.A.B. traffic skills 101 obsticle course. And I am sorry to give the news to the ACA mapping dept. that the major update to the ACR 2018 may have to be updated again in 2019 once the Hudson Valley RT is extended, (the HVTN will then be 20 miles from Hopewell Jct. to South Street at the twn. of Lloyd/New Paltz line) and posibly an update for Millerton and the Harlem Valley RT

And on the subject of trail construction, construction of the Maybrook Trailway 1 (un-paved) from Hopewell Jct. at the WRS DRT to Putnam county at the Putnam Trailway (near Brewster NY) should commence late this year?? or maybe next year ?? for completion by 2020 - this will also be part of the EST.

the below are trailways that are part of the ACR in the Hudson Valley of NY - Millerton NY to Port Jervis NY - section 2 maps 18-21

Harlem Valley RT (Dutchess County NY DPW linear park)

latter this year this RT will be extended to the north from Millerton (Dutchess county NY) to the Columbia county NY line
this section will go through a part of the Rudd Pond Taconic state park - don't know if there will be access from the RT into the park

Walkway Over the Hudson state park

04-13-18 construction of the east end visitor center has begun
the east end entrance on Parker Ave. is sort of part of the construction zone - cyclists should be aware of large vehicles - there is a temp path with fencing - signage to dismount bikes

construction of the west end continues as of 04-22-18 - expected to open 05-20-18
as with the east end there is (or was) signage to dismount bikes - should dismount as there is a bottleneck of pedestrians and cyclists at this end

Hudson Valley RT - town of Lloyd Ulster County NY

SB ACR section 2 map 19 -to continue onto the HVRT from the Walkway, go through opening in barricades (Walkway west end) onto Haviland road then RIGHT into the HVRT east end terminus parking lot  to the trail - LEFT on trail up-hill
NB ACR section 2 map 19 use caution on RT down hill from US rt 9w underpass - RIGHT TURN on down hill into HVRT parking lot out to Haviland Rd. - LEFT then through barricades at Walkway west end (see above)

in the good news - bad news dept. - good news: the HVRT is being extended - when fully extended to the west will reduce a bit of hwy riding and town roads as pertains to the ACR- the bad news is that there will be construction of this (think detours-barricades etc.) which will take some time to be finished

construction has begun of the phase 3 extension from Tony Williams park (current, as of 4-22, west end terminus) to the local fire station almost at NY SR 299 (phs3 will be implemented by the town of Lloyd) cyclists should be aware of large vehicles on Ulster CR 15 and also in the park - at some point the very end of the trail  (original 1997 section - phase 1 Commerce St. to the park) may be blocked off to connect with the new section

and phase 4 extension from the above to the Lloyd town line at South Street an Ulster county road (phs4 construction to be managed by Ulster County) - both to be finished in late Fall of this year (2018)

Ulster County NY press release:

http://ulstercountyny.gov/news/executive-press-releases/ulster-county-and-town-lloyd-announce-start-construction-hudson-valley

also of note:

NB and SB ACR on the phase 2 (2010) section east of the RT bridge over Vineyard Ave. in Highland at the old Vintage Village and (former) lumber warehouse area there is construction of a stick built housing units? with stores in lower part? as part of this construction - a trench was cut across the RT presumably for utilities - as of 04-13-18 was just filled in with gravel cyclists should exercise caution going over this and also be aware of large vehicles entering from a side road onto/across the RT

on the old section just west of Commerce St. and phase 2 (2010) I saw temp construction fencing - don't know what that is about - cyclists going NB on the ACR should be aware of this as the fencing is at the very right edge of the trail surface -on this old section of the RT some sections are very rough - the pavement is deteriorating

Hyde Park section 2 map 19

I have not been able to get the new updates-addendum to the ACR in the Hudson Valley - I guess will have to order a brand new 2018 ACR section 2 and 3 map set
it would seem that NY SR 9G is being used - if indeed the new 2018 route includes the section of 9G from CR 41to CR 40A (town of Hyde Park) - then would go by the other Roosevelt site (Eleanor)  Val Kill - as a suggestion to get to US rt 9 and the main Roosevelt site (FDR) could take the Hyde Park Trails / NPS Farm Lane Trail

at the US rt9 trailhead nearby is the Hyde Park Brewing - brewery/restaurant - I would guess? (or perhaps should) the revised ACR would continue on SR 9G into the City of Pok.-  this hwy. becomes Parker Ave. the WOTH east end entrance is on this street  - of note: there is a deli/convenience store at the intersection of Garden St. and Parker Ave. near the Walkway entrance

yes indeed NY SR 9G is better and there are several places for ice cream on 9G - Carla Majernik had contacted me about changes to the ACR in the Mid Hudson Valley NY - mostly the Harlem Valley Ductchess county section - most likely I had suggested rt 9G in Hyde Park as well - another benefit of 9G is that you can visit the 2 Roosevelts homes - on 9G is Val Kill ELEANOR and via the un-paved Farm Lane trail to US rt9 - there is a traffic light at the trail head and a ped crossing (Hyde Park Brewery/restaurant is nearby) - the Wallace center has bike racks and there is no charge - the FDR home there is a fee for the tour - I haven't gotten up to speed with the precise details of the changes to the ACR here in Dutchess county

here is the video slide show of my BYPD 2016 ride which went to the above from the Walkway OTH (also part of the ACR - see my other post in regards to construction at west end)

caution advisory on US rt 9 in Hyde Park NY - part of the ACR route (section2 map 19) and also NY state bike route 9 - there are sunken storm drains in the shoulder - cyclists should be aware of this - also US rt 9 is a busy hwy

RE:Walkway Over The Hudson west end - visitor center construction

the entire west end is now closed off for construction - there is a fenced path to Haviland Rd. twn. of Lloyd Ulster county NY - SB (to New Paltz) at Haviland Rd. RIGHT then another RIGHT into the Hudson Valley RT parking lot then LEFT onto the RT -NB RIGHT off the RT CAUTION! downhill grade through the parking lot then LEFT onto Haviland Rd. and LEFT at temp entrance through the fenced path then RIGHT onto the Walkway proper

the visitor center is to be opened May 20

Temporary ACA Route Road Closures / Atlantic Coast Route NC to MA
« on: August 26, 2011, 04:43:17 pm »
in case you haven't seen the big weather news Hurricane Irene will be making landfall in the Outer Banks area of NC however un-typical of most storms this storm will NOT be hanging a right at Cape May NJ BUT will be going all the way up the coast to New York City - yes New York City - AND the storm will CONTINUE north up into the Hudson Valley - the storm is big enough to affect the ACR corridor from NC all the way up to MA and beyond - for the first time I have seen a Hurricane warning for my local weather here in Poughkeepsie NY - ACR sec 2 map 19

here are the highlights so far as of Fri. 08/26:
NY,NJ and CT in state of emerg.
mayor Bloomburg of NYC issues mandatory evac for low lying areas of city
NJ gov. Christie issues mandatory evac for the Jersey shore (the "situation" will no doubt be in charge)

there will be very heavy rainfall and no doubt flooding in this area
here are some areas that are prone to flooding:
New Paltz - Wallkill River
Port Jervis - Neversink River

the storm will make landfall in the NYC metro area on Sunday in the AM

even thjough the storm will leave the area by late Sunday - the day after on Monday will be post storm clean-up day - there will be debris on the roads - sections of road still flooded etc

if word can be relayed by the moderator to the ACR tour group leader - tell him/her to "hunker down" in an indoor lodging untill Tue.

Temporary ACA Route Road Closures / trans am route Breckenridge CO
« on: July 25, 2011, 03:47:12 pm »
I checked all the recent posts for the Trans Am Route in CO specificaly the Breckenridge area - there is NO mention of the big (stage) bike race in the area the USA Pro Cycling Challenge of particular note in regards to the Trans Am route is stage 5 Steamboat Springs to Breckenridge - this stage will go through Kremling and finish in Breckenridge - it would seem that a part of the race route will be along CO SR 9 - I would presume the road will be closed in a "rolling barricade" for a relatively short time however,as Breckenridge will be the finish town in all likelyhood there will be no room at the Inn (the Fireside) and other lodging in Breckenridge - in addition to all the racers there are the team support staff, the media, race officials, spectators etc. etc. etc.

In other words - forget about showing up un-anounced on a tour and finding a place to stay for the night

however,if you were to arrive a few days before Aug. 27 and be a spectator - just be sure to show the racers your photos of all that wonderfull scenery that they missed ...

in the town of Lloyd Ulster county NY - both CR12 and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail are still closed as of 04-03-11 - as per Ralph Diaz of the Hudson Valley RT association construction of the new arch bridge should be completed next month - this is the good news, however the bad news: work on another arch bridge on the same county road over an undeveloped section of the same RT will be next - as per the recent addendum the ACR uses the entire open RT from the west end of the Walkway Over The Hudson SP to CR 15 then onto CR 12 over the undeveloped section of the RT via the old darch bridge that will be removed next
