General Discussion / Have any of you gotten sick on tour?
« on: June 23, 2010, 12:38:12 am »
Background:
At 53, I have only been cycling regularly for 2 years. I’ve not been on tour yet but I will as soon as I’m able. (at least that’s the plan)

Today I had planned to cycle to work and back, an 80 mile round trip. I’ve been working up to it and was confident that I could do it.

Then I got sick, several days of fever and a wracking cough.

As I convalesce and more synapses reconnect to their neighbors, I wonder...

What should I do if I got this sick in the middle of a tour?

Has anyone out there been in that situation?

What did you do?

How did it work out?

What would you have done differently?

Thanks in advance,
Sean

General Discussion / A couple of touring questions
« on: January 25, 2010, 03:04:16 pm »
  • If you are with a group that leaves at sunup, you will be packing your tent while it is still wet with dew and condensation, then riding with it like that all day. Doesn’t it begin to form mildew after a few days of this?
  • What about laundry in the same situation? I can easily wash and wring out the days cloths and put them on a line outside but they won’t be dry at sunup. Should I only do laundry on layover days when it has the time to dry? Or don’t do laundry and live with the smell?

General Discussion / It's 15 below zero this morning...

Woke up this morning to -15 F this morning, I think that's -26 C.  :o

I wonder if I should go out for a ride? I bet the traction is fine in the few inches of snow we have laying about...

General Discussion / What's up with the smileys?
« on: January 03, 2010, 08:31:14 pm »
I noticed that in the topic editor window, the smileys are all text. Instead of the graphic smiley it only says "Smiley". If I click one to insert it into the post, it enters  a colon and right parenthesis as I would expect but in the preview or the finished post this is replaced with the word "Smiley".

Does anyone else have this problem?

General Discussion / Should we have a sub-forum for Guided Tours?
« on: January 02, 2010, 02:08:07 am »
Hi,

I just signed up for one of the Guided Tours and was searching the forums for others who had, or were planing to, take this tour. To my surprise, I found nothing.

Then I started searching for any info related to any of the other Guided Tours. I found some references, but no real info.

There is no place on the forums where someone can browse the experiences of veterans of the guided tour they may be interested in. Since a large part fo a tour are you fellow riders, it would be great to get to know them first.

I know I could start a thread here about the tour I'll be taking but after a while it will be buried by the general discussion. Someone coming along next year who may be undecided whether it is worth the money would never see the posts that would grow out of a successful guided tour and may deside to spend their money elsewhere.

If the profits from the guided tours benefit the ACA, shouldn't we make the place for them on the forums?

What do you think?
