MAP B: The Wright Brothers Memorial bridge, US 158, is under repair going east from the mainland to Kitty Hawk. All traffic is routed onto the westbound 2-lane bridge. Barriers down the center prevent vehicles from moving left to pass cyclists. Be aware of potentially hazardous riding next to bridge railing with wind and very close passing from heavy traffic.

MAP C: The new Bonner Bridge over the Oregon Inlet is under construction with vehicles and equipment being used on the existing bridge. Only one lane is available at times and there are potential delays.

From the Seeley Lake Ranger District, Seeley Lake, Montana:
NOTICE: A portion of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route was affected by the 2017 Rice Ridge Fire on the Seeley Lake Ranger District, Lolo National Forest. Bicyclists should take caution when riding along NFS Road #4353 (Morrell-Clearwater Rd.) and NFS Road #477 (Cottonwood Lakes Rd.), as they are likely to encounter standing dead trees (snags), falling rock, unstable road tread, and downed logs. Dead trees may fall unexpectedly and silently, with or without wind. Bicyclists should also expect to encounter log trucks and heavy equipment along these roads, as rehabilitation and maintenance work continues in the fire area. When encountering heavy equipment working on the roadway, bicyclists should stop and make sure they are seen by the equipment operator before proceeding through the work area. There may also be temporary delays or closures along the route. For current information on road conditions, closures or delays, call the Seeley Lake Ranger Station at 406-677-3924.

Road construction is occurring along the Generals Highway between the Giant Forest Museum and the Amphitheater Point Overlook in Sequoia National Park. There will be traffic delays with only one lane open. The Park says bicyclists are permitted through the construction zone but it is not advised due to broken or missing pavement, narrow lanes and no shoulders. If you are planning to bicycle through the construction zone, take additional consideration for delays associated with road construction. Bicyclists are subject to the same traffic-delay schedule as motorized vehicles. The project will be completed before winter of 2018/2019. The delay schedule and more information can be found here: https://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/road-construction.htm

On SR 79 1/2-mile south of Louisiana, the highway is closed due to construction on two bridges. The posted detour by Missouri DOT is about 24 miles. The highway is closed until November 2017.

The cyclists who notified us detoured via US 54 to Bowling Green, then US 61 to Troy. Elevation on their detour was almost flat due to the way US highways are graded. Both highways have wide, paved shoulders so they felt safe on these roads.

(Sept 2017) The devastation caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma in August and September 2017 will be long-lasting. In the short term, campgrounds and lodging will be used by aid workers and construction crews. Clean-up will take months, roads and bridges may be washed out, and some services might not reopen. If you are planning a bike tour this autumn, 2017, or winter, 2018, in the area please consider changing your plans.

Due to wildfires northeast of Detroit (map 23) Forest Road 46 is closed. Because there is no way around this closure Forest Road 42 (on map 21) is also impacted. From what we can see the best detour is from US 26 on map 21, continue on southeast US 26 to Madras. Take US 97 south through Redmond into Bend. Rejoin the route near Bend on map 25.
