The Thorp tunnel is the one I thought was permanently closed.  I haven't seen anything in the local papers about it opening, and the last time I was out in that area the 'Detour' signs were still up.  If the weather cooperates, I might try checking it out.

There are a couple of tunnels on the JWT between Cle Elum and Ellensburg--at least one of which is permanently closed.  There are actually a couple of alternatives  besides I-90.  If you look at the Manastash Metric route, ( http://www.drier-ride.org/map.htm ) you'll see hwy 10 paralleling I-90 on the North and back roads such as Upper Peoh Point Road on the South side; Hwy 10 would be your best bet.

The best coverage I've found in the rural areas of MT, ND, SD, WY and UT has been US Cellular; also along the WA and OR coasts.

Hmmm.  Young, adventurous, no timetable; the worst that could happen is your bikes break down so you continue on hiking or bus riding.  Go for it!

You need to call me when we get rid of some of this snow and take my 'bent or trike for a ride--your butt will thank you.   ;)

It doesn't appear it would be too comfortable for recumbent riders.

I had C-1/C-2 fused in Nov '07 and was riding 3 months later.  The riding position on my upright was rather uncomfortable for me so I bought a LWB recumbent; last year I rode it 3000+ miles with no problems.

Good luck.

Howdy.  I'm down in Cle Elum--you may have seen me riding around; I think I've got the only recumbent in town.  I'm not too keen about riding in the snow and slush so maybe we can meet up when the weather gets a bit better.
