General Discussion / Re: Kennedy Launch
« on: February 22, 2010, 09:45:05 pm »
The closest I've made it is Orlando and the launch is very impressive even from that distance. The difficult part is that the launch gets postponed often and for no apparent reason (at least to the casual observer). As you can understand, they like to make sure that all one billion parts it takes to make a space shuttle are working prior to launch. You need to be flexible in your schedule and be willing to go early because viewing locations  fill up quickly at least where you can see the launch clock and / or the pad. If you don't feel you need to be right at the launch site, any place with in 20 miles you can see everything with the exception of it leaving the pad. You'll be impressed, it's a gross display of horsepower that you sure don't get to see very often. Sorry I don't have any more specific info for you but I do know that people show up days in advance in big RVs and just wait it out so that is really what you'll be up against when going over to the coast.

General Discussion / Re: Aerospoke wheelset VS 36H Wheelset

History has shown that anything is possible if you're will to suffer the consequences. While I doubt anyone will tell you that aerospoke wheels are the way to go, that doesn't mean it wouldn't work for someone who is determined to make them work.

General Discussion / Re: Touring bike recommendation
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:14:45 am »
Spend a little time reading the touring forums and you'll see which bikes are popular for touring and what people think of them. For finding a used bike, keep an eye on Craigslist and use words like touring or vintage in your search. Also check out: Surly LHT, Co Motion Americano, Trek 520, Raleigh Sojourn, Rivendell , Bruce Gordon BLT,
Nashbar, Koga Miyata World Traveler just to name a few. The key is to find bikes that you can ride beforehand to make sure they fit you. I think you'll find that finding bike to test ride is going to be the hardest part because not many bike shops carry touring specific bikes so it's hard to ride numerous brands to see what you like best.
Good Luck

Gear Talk / Re: 3-4 person tent
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:51:27 am »
I have been backpacking and touring since the late 60's and I've never heard of anyone complaining about too much room in a tent so my advice is to oversize rather than follow the manufactures description of how many people fit in a given tent. The extra pound in weight will be meaningless on a long rainy day if you're stuck inside and you and your gear are nice and dry and everyone is happy (or as happy as you can be on a long rainy day)

Gear Talk / Re: Jamis Aurora vs. Surly LHT
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:42:38 am »
I think you should ride both if you can and then make a determination which one fits you best. The LHT has a long top tube that fits some better than others. My frame is undersized compared to what others of my height ride but with a longer stem and MTB bars, my bike fits my style of riding perfectly. The popularity of the LHT speaks for itself. If you talk to 100 LHT riders you're likely to get 75 different answers as to why they like them. No one bike fits everybody though and you may find that the Jamis is a better fit but it's probably best to approach both with an open mind.
