Routes / Jasper to Missoula
« on: May 08, 2008, 01:56:12 am »
Has anybody recently made the trip from Jasper to Missoula on the Great Parks Northern route? How did you get to Jasper? What is the trip like. The info claims there are plenty of small towns with services but it sure doesn't appear so just looking at a map. I have not bought the Adventure Cycling map just yet. I don't mind camping but would rather not in bear country. Would appreciate any first hand experience you could provide.

Routes / Northern Tier Lodging
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:58:40 pm »
Here's an idea KL, find an old tent and sleeping bag then mail them to yourself general delivery to the Marblemount post office.(you might want to call before to make sure it's ok.) When you reach Marblemount, strap the extra gear to your bike then hoof it on to the Colonial Creek Campground for your only night camping. You could carry the extra load up two mountain passes the next day and then mail it home in Mazama or Winthrop. If you're not too attached to it you could give it away or toss it in the campground dumpster. After making the same trip with 60 pounds of gear, I have often considered how I would do it differently - hope this helps- planning is half the fun - just remember - there's always a way!

Routes / Northern Tier into Portland, OR
« on: February 23, 2007, 05:09:35 pm »
After completing the Northern Tier you can catch the Amtrak in Belingham - you can transport your bike simply by hanging it up on their special bike racks in the luggage car.The train will take you through Seattle and then right into the heart of downtown Portland.

Routes / Trans Am midpoint????
« on: August 03, 2006, 12:27:18 am »
Thanks Bill - Your trip sounds close to how I was thinking. Just three questions. What time of the year did you leave Yorktown? How many days did it take you to get to Frisco? How did you handle transporting your bike?

Routes / Trans Am midpoint????
« on: August 01, 2006, 09:26:46 pm »
I'm considering doing the Trans Am east to west in two summers. What would be a logical halfway point to conviniently pack up the bike, fly home and then return the following summer to pick up where I left off?

Routes / Vancouver BC route info???
« on: July 09, 2006, 09:12:40 pm »
Has anyone ridden the downtown Vancouver route recommended on Adventure Cycling's Pacific Coast map?
I'll be arriving by train and am trying to decide if I should ride the route through downtown as suggested on the map or if I should take a taxi to the hotel in Surrey. Let me know if you've been down this road before.

General Discussion / From Yorktown Mid June
« on: August 04, 2008, 11:35:49 pm »
Leaving from Yorktown June 15, 2009. I'd like to get an earlier start but work won't allow. Will heat be an issue mid june in Virginia? Any chance of finishing in Florence by Sept. 1st?

General Discussion / Hip Bursitis
« on: March 11, 2008, 01:16:55 am »
Anyone have any experience overcoming hip bursitis? It has really cut into my ability to enjoy a good ride. I would love to do a longer tour in the summer but lately I feel fortunate just to be able to ride for an hour and sometimes that's not very fun. The only thing I haven't tried are the steroid injections. Any experiences/ideas???

General Discussion / Hemorrhoids
« on: November 01, 2007, 01:38:15 am »
I am doing my best to keep riding through the fall and winter but have been sidelined with hemorrhoids. I've been a cyclist for years but this is this first time I've had this problem. Do I stay off the bike for several weeks or do I just put on the Prep H and keep pedaling? I want to take a long tour in the spring and am afraid of this problem sneaking up on me again. What to do?????

General Discussion / Overtraining - Real, or Myth?

Rest is just as important as riding 55 mile days. Without proper rest you are just running yourself into the ground.

General Discussion / Lower back pain survivors???
« on: November 23, 2006, 01:18:00 am »
I'm wondering if there is anyone out there with an encouraging story for those of us that have sidelined our touring dreams due to chronic lower back pain. I had a long cycling tour planned for this spring but have had to put the plan on hold because my back is killing me. I continue to ride but it's not fun. Anyone out there that has overcome this problem to go onto a cross country tour???

General Discussion / Late start from Yorktown
« on: August 06, 2006, 12:22:58 pm »
I'm thinking of staring the Trans Am next year in late June. I'll be traveling east to west. I'd like to start earlier but I'm a teacher and our school year runs through mid June. Anyone out there started this late? Is it possible to do this or will the heat make this miserable?

General Discussion / Artificial joints on tour
« on: July 14, 2006, 08:59:36 pm »
The cycling world is a buzz with the news of Yellow Jersey contender Floyd Landis needing hip replacement surgery next year. This got me to thinking about a friend and fellow cyclist who is in need of a knee replacement. He is concerned about his future on the road. Does anyone know of someone who has had an knee or hip replacement and has gone on to do a cross country tour? My friend could use some encouragement.
