Classifieds / Wanted - Atlantic Coast Section 7 Map

Hello All,

I had previously purchased the Atlantic Coast section 7 map as part of a group of maps used for my cross country tour in 2009 (http://bikedenbec.blogspot.com).  I had some international cyclists stay with me earlier this year through Warmshowers.org and they had damaged their iPhone they were using as navigation so I loaned them my map.  They said they had sent it back several months ago but it hasn't arrived yet - I'm thinking they sent it to the wrong person.  I'm planning a tour with a friend from Fort Lauderdale to Key West and back in October and even though I did that trip last November and probably don't need a map for it, I would still like to have one.  I'm all for supporting Adventure Cycling but really can't afford a new map plus shipping charges right now (I just renewed my membership).  If anyone has one they no longer need I would greatly appreciate it.  We are leaving on October 9th 2011 so time is a bit short.  Please let me know asap.  Thank you in advance.

I have Hypoglycemia in daily life so I was concerned on my tour.  I always kept some Fig Newtons in my handlebar bag.  They worked perfectly - but the secret is to recognize the problem and attack it immediately. The longer you push on after you feel the bonk coming - the worse the problem will be and the longer to get out of it.  As others have said - know your limits.

1 can Hormel Chili - add one can water (or a bit more), heat to boil and add Idahoan Three Cheese instant potatoes - eat out of the pot.

I don't know about healthy but it certainly is hardy!

Routes / Re: Badlands NP & Mount Rushmore is it possible?

Hey Tony,

I did a similar trip this year (2009) and thoroughly enjoyed my ride through the Badlands and Black Hills - it was one of the best parts of my trip.  I grew up in South Dakota (now living in Ft. Lauderdale) and was amazed at how much more enjoyable the area was to visit on bicycle. 

To answer your question - I rode the Cowboy Trial (or the nice road right next to it) to Newport, NE and then up to Burke, SD - on to Winner, SD and then to Presho, SD where I picked up the road that runs next to I-90 almost all the way to Wall, SD.  I didn't go into Wall the first day but rode into the Badlands and camped there - then rode though the Badlands the next day - on to Wall, SD where I camped at a nice campground just to the S. side of Main Street.  From Wall I had to ride I-90 into Rapid City (legal in South Dakota).  The next day I rode to Mount Rushmore (but didn't stay there long) and continued on to Crazy Horse Monument which is right on the Mickelson Trail.  I rode the Mickelson Trial (fantastic!) to almost Lead / Deadwood and then got on Hwy 14 to Spearfish, SD and all the way across Wyoming.  Mount Rushmore is a steep climb but not too long and certainly beautiful. 

I agree with the other posters that you continue on to Wyoming like I did unless you are looking for an easier (and possibly less exciting) ride.  The Big Horn mountains were the most challenging of my trip especially with the weather conditions I encountered at the top, but also the most rewarding.  Yellowstone was beautiful but very biker unfriendly with narrow roads WAY too much traffic and Huge RV's taking up the whole road - but I would possibly do it again.  It was suggested to me to rather take a road north of Cody, WY which is a very scenic bypass of Yellowstone and I can get that information for you if you would like.

Connecting ACA Routes / Re: Lincoln NE, to Bonesteel SD via Cowboy Rail Trail

I rode this on my trip (which I am still on) and it was a great route.  The road from Lincoln is actually Hwy 15 but be sure to take the road to Rising City over to 81 as it has a nice sholder where the road past David City to 81 has no shoulder and lots of trucks.  81 has a great shoulder and a very nice road all the way up to Norfolk where you can pick up the Cowboy trail.  The trail is very nice but there is also a very nice road running right next to it with wide shoulders and rumble strip between traffic and you.  I rode on both.  I took this route until I was able to go north to Burke, SD which is also a nice road.  The road to Winner has small shoulder and rumble strip (not the really bad type) but traffic is low.  There are no services between Winner, SD and Presho SD but after that you can ride on the Interstate or the road that runs right next to it all the way to the Badlands.

The replies are what I was expecting - thanks everyone.  I was not really thinking of bringing beer or whatever on the bike but thinking more about having a way to keep it chilled at the campsite.  Guess I need to drink faster!

I'm curious if any bicycle tourists carry a small cooler on the bike for food and of course beer!  I'm debating about it myself - thoughts?

Connecting ACA Routes / Lincoln NE, to Bonesteel SD via Cowboy Rail Trail

I'm doing a cross country ride starting April 25th and my proposed route is posted here (Mostly ACA Routes)

I'm visiting a sister in Lincoln NE and then heading to Pierre, SD.  Rather than backtrack to the ACA route, I was thinking of heading North from Lincoln on Hwy 79 until I get to the Cowboy Rail Trail, then following that trail until I can connect with the L&C route at Bonesteel, SD.  Has anyone ridden on the Cowboy trail?  It starts at Norfolk, NE.  Anyone have opninions for or against this proposed route between Lincoln, NE and Bonesteel, SD?

I did one of those Google Maps like the Schultz's did (thanks BTW) with my intended route (using mostly ACA maps that I bought).  If anyone is still watching this post - can you please check my route between Rapid City, SD and Gillette, WY to see if what I have is the best route (or the route you took or recommend)?  It was hard to tell from the Shultz map exactly where they went (and I think they had a side trip to Deadwood).  Anyway, let me know what you think.  I was originally going to go directly from Pierre, SD to Belle Fourche but why miss the best part of South Dakota?  I also wanted to use at least some of the Mickleson Trail through the Black Hills.
