Connecting ACA Routes / Pierre, SD to Yellowstone
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:52:00 pm »
I'm looking to connect L&C trail from Pierre, SD to Yellowstone and I need to go through Gillette, WY to visit my Sister.  I spoke with some good folks (the Shultz's) who took a similar route last year but they went into Montanna for a good portion of the ride.  I'm thinking of going from Belle Fourche, SD and basically take US 14 across the state of Wyoming.  Has anyone done this route that could offer some info or advice?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dennis

I checked out the Mississippi River Trail and I think it looks like a good route to join these two ACA routes.

Thanks for your help JulsaJohn!

Thanks for that info.  I don't have the actual maps yet - I'm going by the online versions, but from what I can tell the Undground Railroad comes closes to L&C near Paducah, KY.  L&C picks up at St. Lewis - so I guess I need the best route between those two points.

Does anyone know if their is a good route to connect Underground Railroad to Lewis and Clark?  Their isn't much distance between and perhaps ACA has a connector map but I haven't come across it yet.  I'll be riding Florida to Washington State this spring.  Thanks in advance!  Dennis

Nomadict1 - I just noticed your add in the classifieds.  Do you have any pictures of the bike?  If so please send to denbec@gmail.com.  St. Augustine might be a bit far unless the bike is shipped.  Thanks!

Nomadict1 - where in Florida are you?  I'm in Ft. Lauderdale.  I don't want to automatically discount your bike as it sounds like what I am looking for, but if I decide to go with a later model bike I'll probably just rebuild my 96 Cannondale Hybrid.  Can you give a few specifics on the bike you have like condition and how many miles etc.?

Thanks!

Thanks Zaleski7.  It all sounds about right.  I've decided to put off buying a bike until the end of January but I may be interested at that time.  Do you have any pictures?  You can send them to denbec@gmail.com

A note to this forum topic - Because of budget issues and other factors (will the company I work for stay in business?!) I put off purchasing the bike until the end of January at the earliest.  But at that time I will need to get all my equipment together so I can start training on a loaded bike.

Please review the original post above and if anyone has equipment - please let me know.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dennis

Thanks Tourista829!  I used to go to Downtown Bicycles too - they closed several years ago and despite all the bike shops here there are none that I have found particularly useful.  Seems they all just want you to buy an expensive bike they have on display and not bother them with details and accessories.  Maybe they don't think I'm serious about my ride.

Anyway, now you have me interested in a trip to Tampa!   :)  However, my budget is preventing that for the moment.  If I do get over that way I will let you know.  Thanks again for the advise!

You would think so, but I'm not having much luck finding a touring type bike.  Plus, I'm hoping that someone in this forum might be more likely to have a bike that works and not someone who is trying to get rid of a damaged one.

On a realated topic - has anyone had a good experience with a bike shop in Fort Lauderdale?  I have been to almost every one to possibly buy a new bike or rebuild my old Cannondale. I went with a list of accessories I would need and they are all very friendly and promised to get back to me but not one has called back yet.  I am getting a little frustrated with this process.

Happy trails to everyone!

I am planning a cross country solo bike tour (Fort Lauderdale, FL to Seattle, WA) in May 2009.  I will be on a tight budget because I will be without an income for the 4 months it should take to complete the ride.  Im looking for a decent (not necessarily the best) tour bike that is equipped for a long distance tour (fenders, pannier bags, lights etc).  Ideally someone close to Fort Lauderdale who has recently done a tour might want to sell, rent or lend their bike for my training and ride.   If you own a bike of this type please contact me with your asking price and bike description via my e-mail address denbec@gmail.com.  Serious only please.

I am doing a cross country ride (Ft. Lauderdale, FL - Seattle, WA) in May of '09 and am looking for all the equipment.  I may be interested in your bike but I'm only 5'9 - is it built for a tall dude?

Thanks,

Dennis

Routes / Yellowstone to Badlands
« on: December 17, 2008, 10:36:50 am »
Thanks Jfitch for the forum adivce - I will check that out.  I plan on doing mostly video blogging if possible (I don't think I can write quite as eloquently as the Shultz's did) so I need a media friendly forum.

Schultz's - I wish I knew how well I will be able to tackle those climbs.  I would like nothing more than to take the most challenging route, but once again I've never done climbs like that so for this trip I will take the "middle ground".

I think one of the most difficult things for me to do will be to slow down and enjoy the trip rather than going from point A to B as quickly as possible - but I am determined to do exactly that.  The only scheduled event I want to attend is a family reunion in South Dakota in June. The first part of my ride should be easier to judge timing - the last part I don't want to be so concerned about it and just enjoy the trip.

Its getting closer and I'm getting excited!  :)

To the Shultz's - I'm sorry to keep bothering you especially since I know you have answered many questions while on your trip.  But I'm still plotting my route through WY, Yellowstone and connecting to the NT (with advice from Lightspeed and Jimbo) and I have 2 questions:

1.  Your route after Yellowstone is hard to follow on the map in your blog and I was wondering why you didn't just exit Yellowstone at Hwy 14 and take that across?  I read your Alt 14 story again and I defnitely want to avoid that!
2.  If I'm reading Jimbo's directions correctly, he says take 89 to 12 - but you mention Norris, Ennis, Cameron which goes off in a more west direction (renenber I'm going west on my trip) . Did you end up on that route because of the side trip to Bozeman?

Jimbo and Lightspeed are certainly welcome to answer as well.  Thanks again to all.

Unless I find a better forum, I will probably keep my current blog I started a while back for this ride.  Please make a note of it.  :)
