California / San Fran to Santa Barbara
« on: May 30, 2012, 01:15:33 pm »
Hello folks -

Sorry that this is a wee bit of a repeat, but my wife and I are planning to ride from SF to Santa Barbara this summer.  We only have about 6 days to do it.  I've toured quite a bit, but my wife is quite new to it.  She's totally fit but is trying to get comfortable on the bike.

First, is 6 days pushing it?  If it is, does anyone know how we can get 50-70 miles outside of San Fran to start?  We're from NYC so connections are slim on the west coast.  Is there a train that we can hop with our gear?  If so, what's the process and cost?

Any other advice is much appreciated!

General Discussion / Bike shop in Bellingham?
« on: June 15, 2010, 01:40:21 pm »
Hello there -

I'm flying out of Brooklyn, NY and into Bellingham, WA on the 24th of July to start my way down to San Fran.  I'm still weighing a couple of options for shipping my bike out.

My first and I think preferable option is to purchase and aircaddy box and fedex my bike to a bike shop in Bellingham.  The problem is that I'm not from Bellingham, ever been to Bellingham or even know anyone in Bellingham.  Does anyone know any trustworthy bike shops that would be willing to work with me on this front?

My second option is to ship it through REI.  They offer the bike shipping service from store to store.  Its a little more expensive but might be worth the smoothness.

Any thoughts/advice are welcomed and appreciated!  Cheers!

Routes / Pacific Coast - starting in Bellingham or Seattle?
« on: June 03, 2010, 01:58:06 pm »
I've already recieved some great tips - thanks so much.  Just thought I'd take a poll.

Any suggestions regarding Bellingham vs Seattle are most welcomed too!

Also, any idea if you can get a ferry from San Juans to Port Angeles?  I'm debating between the Peninsula and inland routes through Washington.

what about flying into Bellingham?  I hear great things about the small city.  Also, its right on a ferry line to San Juan.  Thoughts?

General Discussion / Shipping a bike through REI

Hi all -

I'm wondering if anyone knows if REI still ships bikes from one store location to another??  If anyone has or knows of anyone who has - please send some advice. Positive or negative experience?  How long did it take?

Routes / Pacific Coast - getting to the San Juans from Seattle
« on: May 25, 2010, 03:10:46 pm »
Hi all -

I'm flying into Seattle at the end of July to start a 3 week trip down the coast - ending in San fran.  As of now I really want to hit the peninsula route of Washington, down Oregon's coast and through the redwoods in California.  Seattle seems to be cheaper than vancouver to fly to.  Any thoughts on how to get to the legendary San Juans before starting out to the Washington Peninsula?  I know there are boats that go up and down.  Is there a ferry from Seattle though?

Any adivice would be welcomed!!

Hey Matt -

I'm in the midst of planning the exact trip.  I'm living in Brooklyn so I'm going to ship my bike out to the REI in Seattle and then meet up with it there.  From Seattle I'm trying to figure out a route to the San Juan Islands.  From there I'll come down and hit the Peninsula route through the first part of Washington.  I'm also planning on ending up in San Fran and am looking to do it in 21 days at the most.  It means some heavy days of riding but I'm down for long days in the saddle.

I'll be camping for the entire trip.  If you're planning on doing the same you'll have a lot more freedom to hit the longer days.

If anyone has any info on hitting up the San Juans from Seattle I'd love to hear.

best of luck and thanks for the post.

Routes / Pacific Coast or new Sierra - Cascades route?
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:26:32 pm »
Hello all -

I'm new to the biking community and in the midst of planning my first tour.  I'm debating whether to complete the northern portions of the Pacific Coast or new Sierra - Cascades route?  I want to start in either Seattle or Vancouver and end in San Fran.  I'm looking for the most scenic route and know that I want to see the Oregon coast and the redwoods in northern cali.  On the flip side I'm in love the mountains out that way.  As a trail runner by trade, I'd love to be in the mtns at least some of the trip.

Anyone have suggestions as how to mix these two routes?  I have three weeks (last week in July and first two weeks of August).  Any other advice to a novice would be much appreciated.
