"BTW, you should give a response to your Rohloff question as it looks a bit weird to ask a question and then never return to it.  :)"

Really? Seems like just taking up space if he got his answer.

General Discussion / Re: Warm tour ideas (US)

The Natches Trace would be lovely this time of year.
I toured the Keeweenaw Peninsulao (the part of Michigan directly north of Wisconsin)  in July with no problems finding water.

The old saddle can of worms is officially open. No break-in period for me with B-17: comfortable right out of the box, mostly because the shape and width fits me perfectly. The Selle Anatomica never felt right.
Perhaps the Brooks Softened Flyer with the springs (like the B-17 175 mm wide) or the B-67 Softened which is 205 mm and has the springs or the B-33 which is a whopping 235 mm wide also with springs.

Gear Talk / Re: 2 wheeled trailer vs 1 wheel
« on: December 30, 2020, 06:26:49 pm »
I've ridden a BOB Yak at greater than 40 mph many times and always felt secure. I think it is more the bike and quality of the wheels than the BOB that is the limiting factor. I'd never put one on a recumbent and hopefully a friend of mine will weigh in on his experience with that.

Has anyone ridden this route in the summer? Is it as beautiful as it appears?

General Discussion / Re: Kickstands - Love them or leave them?
« on: December 13, 2020, 12:27:49 pm »
Kickstand on only 1 of my 5 bikes. It is on the one I pull trailer with granddaughter in. I've seen too many good frames ruined by over tightening the bolt on the chainstays. The touring bike can easily lay on the panniers.

Well, that may be the difference: at 68 years old I don't do a lot of walking after getting into camp.

Gear Talk / Re: Electronic shifters?
« on: November 17, 2020, 08:24:21 pm »
I'm only responding because of your user name: I grew up in Puyallup and now live in Wisconsin but get back frequently, especially to hike or snowshoe at Mt Rainier.
Actually, I am considering electronic shifting for touring if I can get low of 20 gear inches. I think the new Sram group may just offer that.

Crocs. Very light weight, good enough to walk, not hike, in. Ugly, but so what?

A friend rode a Trek Postal carbon fiber bike for many years on tour with a trailer with no problems.

Gear Talk / Re: How much does your sleeping gear weigh?
« on: November 10, 2020, 06:05:08 pm »
I'm 68 years old so weight is very important to me, but must also function well. I too am 6'2" which affects weight of what I buy. Every thing here is much lighter than what I used just 3 years ago.
Tent  4# 4 oz
bag   30 degree bag  2# 1 oz ;  50 degree bag   1# 10 oz
pad   1# 8 oz
It's a lot of work comparing equipment. good luck.

The Yak did disappear from their website for a time but has reappeared.

Gear Talk / Re: Compression sacks - do you use them?

Yes, for the sleeping bag. Two gallon zip lock bags for clothes but mostly for organizational purposes.

General Discussion / Re: The Truth about $8.00 Walmart Break Pads.
« on: July 31, 2020, 05:01:09 pm »
If your front brake pads last 2-3 times longer than the rear logic says that you are not braking properly, i.e., not using primarily the front brake. See Sheldon Brown's articles on the subject.
There are differences and many experts think that Kool Stop are superior.
