also, to note.....a lot of times, assuming you're camping, plan on pitching tent near a river and that way you can fish well into evening....that way you'll have a camp set up and can stay out in the river when most of the hatches start up....you could then fish a bit in the morning before break camp...and sometimes catch some early morning hatches....

hey there

i took fly-fishing gear with me when i biked the TransAm back in 2007.

i was def glad i brought it along as there were some hot days where last thing i wanted to do was be biking in mid day and opted to wade in a river and fish.

not that i'm saying not to buy a license but....i didn't buy any mainly b/c the streams are so remote, esp the more west you get you run into no one....plus, if you're not keeping the fish who cares.

i was able to catch fish in nearly all the states out west (kansas not so much).

i'd say, if you like to fish, a bike trip is a great time to carry some gear along....it's a great way to break the day up, esp on a lunch break....plus it provides you the opportunity to catch fish native only to certain areas of the U.S.

i.e.:  catching 4 wild cutthroat trout in middle of nowhere Montana is something I can't quite reel in back home in Virginia.

do some research on some of the bigger streams you might come across and maybe a guide for half a day would be a cool thing to do....

south of rock springs is very scenic.
 esp if you head down and around Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

I lived there for 6 months on a travel nurse assignment and found myself heading south of Rock Springs and into Utah/Colorado towards town of Dinosaur most times than not.

If time allows you should check out the Geologic Loop that branches off the southern part of the Flaming Gorge Loop.

Hopefull you all headed in that direction, seeing I think I'm posting too late.

Yeh..I was going to bring up point about how there are countless other environmental disasters going on, but just in other countries, that we most likely in some or another profit from.
I guess now the US knows what it feels like, to some degree.  Yet, I doubt this tragedy will really change the ways things are run around this country.  Unfortunately.  Seems like once the media "forgets" about it than so does everyone else, more or less.

I know I buy as much local food as possible and ride my bike and BOB trailer to food store a couple miles down road.  So I guess that's my small way of trying to reduce my consumption of oil.

Sometimes it's hard to feel like it's making a difference though, esp when something with such magnitude as the recent Gulf spill occurs.

Blargh.

Curious as to folks' thoughts on this.

1- Have you changed a planned bicycle trip d/t having to DRIVE or FLY to a starting location?

2- Has ACA done anything in regards to addressing their SUPPORTED and EVENTS tours seeing those tours consume a large quantity of fossil fuels to drive peoples' gear around, etc.

3- Are people boycotting BP/any other gas companies?

Anyways, just curious seeing people see and use bicycle travel for different reasons.

In Kansas I saw a piece of trash alongside the road.

It was captivating.

I plan to go back in twenty years to see if it's still there.

if you're not carrying any gear then you'll be fine, assuming no major mechincal issues.

i did the TransAm and averaged 110.5 miles/day for 39 days riding with 30 lbs of gear strapped to bicycle.

your body will adapt and get used to routine, esp if you're already in decent shape, which it sounds like.

take pair of warm wool socks and cut thumb holes in them.
use them as mittens.

i have Raynaud's syndrome and it has worked great for me.
of course you can then put a real mitten over the "socked" hand to keep thumb warm.

so, i was on a bike ride today and went up Afton mtn (crozet, va) and intended on stopping at the Cookie Lady's house as usual to top off water bottles.

The bicycle that has always sat outside was gone, the water hose gone, the picnic table gone, the "bikers welcome" sign gone, the "cookie lady" sign gone.

in place of it all was a sign tapped across the front door stating, simply, "no trespassing, no loitering".

say what?

anybody know anything about her passing away or having to go to a nursing home and no one to keep things up?
i haven't heard/read anything in local papers and curious if anyone else has any word?

big shock to me.
