Routes / Re: Biking for Local Food
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:52:19 am »
just to add a thought...

your body will require a lot more calories/day.  eating fresh produce won't cut it and finding local foods that are super high in calories/protein/etc is dunna be a pretty steep task.

good luck in wyoming.

maybe you could fill BOB trailer with dirt and grow the food as you go...it'll get plenty of sunshine/rain/etc and won't go bad as fast? : ;D

there's a real thorough desription of the route and road surface here on ACA website.
not sure if you've read that yet.
you could also check out crazyguyonabike.com and read folks journals for that route.

i do travel nursing, with
each assignment lasting 13 weeks and i usually take a month or two off between each assignment for bike touring, fishing, etc, etc.  so i've found the travel nursing  to be great esp for my always restless age of 25.

two week notice is usually the polite thing to do...esp if there's chance you'd like for them to rehire you...or to write a good recommendation for your future jobs.

not sure if  you work for a chain restaurant or a local place, but maybe you could work some deal wtih them or ask? just tossin some random thoughts out there.

Routes / Re: Glacier National Park to Park City, UT

I was just living out in Green River, WY on a travel nurse assignment for 6 months and could not believe the scenery out in this area of WY and UT.... awesome to say the least.

...If you're heading south from Jackson, WY then taking 189 out towards Pinedale is a real scenic ride.  Then continue on 189 heading south towards Evanston, WY (good town to restock everything).  Once leaving Evanston there is Rt. 150 that heads south and into Utah and winds through the Wasatch N'tl Forest and then to Park City, Ut.

Rt 89 runs more parallel to Idaho/UT border and might be more direct shot to Evanston, but I didn't have time to ride or drive that road.

Routes / Re: Elevation chart for Atlantic Coast route?
« on: February 14, 2010, 09:45:39 am »
I guess I'm a little confused....we're talking about the Atlantic Coast right?
All and all there aren't any extreme elevation changes or long climbs like out west.
Maybe repetitive, rolling terrain, esp once hit VA up to Maine, but nothing that I would really plan my day around.

...if want a topo map you could use google.com and click on "maps" top left of screen and then hit "terrain" button.

if you're desperate for atlantic ocean then hitch ride across chesapeake bay bridge and the ocean will be more within reach of pedal, so to speak...

but, i think you'll find after a xc tour or two that it's not necessarily if you reach ocean to ocean, but rather everything inbetween.

just my opinion.

man...I LOVE the Grateful Dead (a.k.a. on this thread:  G-D).  Often listen to them while pedaling along sometimes.

Hands down... best album of theirs is "Europe 1972"...awesome set list.
Although their album of Bob Dylan covers is quite awesome "Postcards of the Hanging"

...have we thread drifted yet????

1.  go to google maps and use the yellow person, hover it over the road you want and then a picture of the road will come up....at least it'll give you some idea of shoulder/etc.

2.  if 522 looks bad rt 11 can sometimes be decent

3.  be careful on small section of 340 to get you to north entrance to snp.

public libraries best bet/most reliable thing to hang hat on, in my opinion.
esp through a lot of the remote stretches
