Gear Talk / Re: Newbie looking for Good Gear advice

... Where are the best online stores for gear that works and low prices?

Not sure, I generally try and support my LBS, but that is me.

I'm with ya there, I just found a good one and I'm trying to work with them on my needs. So far we have had a good exchange :)

It's going to blow our budget just flying out to Hawaii, once there we have next to no $$ so every penny will be watched...
You do know, I hope, that food and other things are extremely expensive in Hawaii compared to on the mainland.  I worked there for five months in 1981, and it was 20  more years (2001) before the price of a lot of things on the mainland caught up to what they were in Hawaii in 1981.

Yes we are watching food costs, we tend to only buy basic ingredients and make our own food to avoid more mark up. It may also be cheaper for us to rent bikes there than shipping our own in the long run, for only a weeks stay. We have a year to iron it all out :)

Our trip is getting planned and equiped with extream tighness :( gear is being looked for in thrift shops as well as some of my old backpacking gear from 30 years ago. It's going to blow our budget just flying out to Hawaii, once there we have next to no $$ so every penny will be watched... But we will get there and we will have a great ride :)

Looks like the big island will be our first choice. Can anyone suggest good maps of the non toursty side? We are both from a tourist town here in CA and don't need that same kind of insanity on our get away trip :)

"Roughing it Easy"

Now that sounds like a fun book :) Just don't let my wife know I'm looking for more cookbooks... after I hit around 500 cookbooks she started to get twitchy on the subject...

Being a cook I can tell I'm going to have a problem keeping my "Kitchen Kit" down to a reasonable size. I keep trying to load up a dutch oven... and I can't seem to talk myself out of it... I've cooked on the little pots and pans that where popular in the 70's and 80's but haven't tried the newer titanium kits. I can't see where they will do any better then the older gear... Nothing cooks as good as a dutch oven when you need a dutch oven... ARRGGHH!!!!

Ok, found my old post on our Hawaii plans.

Can anyone tell us if anything has changed in the last year? We just started training again (seriously this time) and will be heading out there in 2011, not 100% on island or the date at this moment.

Back again :) Next year is my wife and I 20 anyversory and we want to ride around one of the islands of Hawaii. I remember bringing it up last year and think Maui was placed high on the list. We have started training and getting out equipment set up, really at the begining of the equipment issue :p We still don't know if we will beable to bring our bikes yet or not, think SUPER tight budget, so shipping the bikes vs renting a few is something still to be researched.

Anyone have comments on panniers good for the Hawaii weather? Personally I don't mind spending the money on quality items but my wife gets kind of funny when the $$ start racking up, so best bang for the bucks would be a good place to start.

I haven't choosen an island yet but plan on getting the topo maps of any routes we like. What maps of the islands would be good to get once we choose the island?

I'm sure more questions will pop up as the time passes and I'll be posting here with all the developments :)

Nice link :) thanks, Ya I figured they would charge an arm and a leg... Was looking at some of the "tour Hawaii" web sites but have no clue yet as to what ones are worth the $$ Still in reaserch mode there :p If you don't mind me asking about how much was the full trip? I'm looking at about 1 week on the island.

Thankyou for the info, still love to hear from others about their experiences...

I am planning to camp most of the trip, do you think that is posable there? Any suggestions on rentals or did you bring over your own bike?

I'll be going there from Fresno, CA. by that time. Didn't think it would be easy to get all our equipment and bikes there as easaly, so renting a reasonable bike would be our first choice.

ANY hints as to where to get local info for this trip would be a huge help :D

My wife and I will be going to Hawaii for our 20th aniversory. It will also be our first real bike tour trip. However I seem to have lost a link to a place in Hawaii that did tours and rentals.

I would love to hear from someone that has toured any of the islands on a bike. Any experiences would be great :D
