For serious situations, and you know you will be in serious terrain ( no cell etc) check into a SPOT device.  It is not for directions, but may save you from a serious situation. It makes use of satellites and hence does give you communication capability with the "Outside World" in an emergency.

StevenP:  I just finished St. LOuis-Greensboro, NC on the TransAm, found firehouses, churches, and city parks accomodating.  Always start the conversation with "I'm riding coast to coast"  it's like a passport for permission.  Blackbear

I am leaving St. Louis May 14,2011, Southest in Illinois into Kentucky across to Virginia and into North Carolina. From St. Louis you can hit the Adventure Cyclist Southern Tour map at Murphysboro, Il then across Kentucky. Kentucky highway maps show sthis route as Route 76. Also get the Southern Tour maps from Adventure Cyclist.  Blackbear
