The Platypus water bottles I have two of those and yes they weigh about 1 ounce a piece and hold 1 liter. :)
I would say if you know your going to need to carry more water then yes this is the way to go. :)

DaveB,
Thank you for your reply and I will make sure I have food when needed after looking over my maps.
I have many, many miles under my belt riding tours and 45 mile days so I know about the water but thank you for pointing that out to me that is much appreciated.
I plan to carry what I need and learned about carrying weight from my Thur-Hikes of the AT.
My stated weights (capacity wise) Front rack max-25lbs., Rear rack max 154lbs. these are the weights for the racks I am not carrying that kind of weight. :)
The only experience I don't have is on a long distance ride with the bike loaded but hopefully if the weather holds up I will get out with  a fully loaded bike and have some fun. ;D ;D ;D

Thank you for all your reply's. ;D
I just bought a Axiom Journey and much-much better then the stock rear rack.
I jumped on the REI sale and ordered a set of Ortileb front classic rollers to match my back classic rollers and last but not least I ordered the Jannd front low rider rack and hope I don't have a problem with because of my new SKS fenders.
Yes I am getting ready for touring and can't wait to go- well go some where ;D :)
The pannier's are Yellow ;)

Gear Talk / Rear Rack Bicycle
« on: October 05, 2010, 05:19:34 pm »
Hello, :)
I just emailed Fuji and ask about the rear rack that came with my 2008 Fuji bicycle as far as how much weight the rack was rated at and I must say I got a fast reply from them. Here is a copy and paste from them:
The stock rack on the Touring model is rated at 35 lbs.
So my question is will this rear rack be enough for me to use along with a front rack for self contained touring?
I realize it would be determined by how much weight would I will be taking and I can only answer that saying I have all my backpacking gear from hiking the Appalachian Trail and never carried more them 38 pounds and that was with 5 1/2 days of food,2 liters of water and fuel for cooking.

So I hope this makes some kind of sense and thank you for your time. :)

Gear Talk / all weight in the rear ?
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:46:51 am »
Hi everyone, :)
I have search the forums for this subject and can't seem to find what I am looking for.
Please forgive me if it is listed and I didn't find it. I have a 2008 Fuji touring bike and have just bought the Ortileb  Back-Roller Classic pair and wanted to know if it's OK just to run all the weight in the back and not run front rack and Pannier's ? I will run no more then around 35 to 40 pounds total for touring and just wanted to go with the back rack and set of Pannier's and rack bag.
I run Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase front and back and love them 700x32 and also have had custom wheels made the Mavic A-719 so is this doable can I get away with this set up ?
Than you all for your help and suggestions it is very much appreciated.

Gear Talk / Lone Peak Pannier Question
« on: May 10, 2010, 05:22:12 pm »
I was looking at the Lone Peak Parley's Summit Pannier at 2000 cui and was wondering if anyone has used these Pannier's for touring ? http://www.lonepeakpacks.com/
How do the Pannier's hold up and could I use these for both front and back Pannier's to give me a total of 4000 cui. of carrying space ?
I have a 2008 Fuji touring bike and I am looking to start touring this year.
First Tour 284 miles then the next tour will be app. 590 miles all self contained.
I also have Thur-hiked the Appalachian Trail with a 3800 cui. pack with 5 days worth of food and 2 liters of water for a combined weight of app. 33 to 38 pounds.
I know this is not hiking and bicycle touring so that is why I am asking for your help and it would be much appreciated and thank you for your time. :)

You might ask the car rental place if they can pick the vehicle up at your destimation, or provide a driver to drop you off.

good idea and thanks. ;D

furiousapathy - thank you for your reply and this gives me another idea. ;)
I could book a room in Front Royal drive there drop off the bike then drive back to drop off the car and get a cab.
Or maybe find a cab that has an SUV so I could drop off the car then ride into Front Royal. :-\ ::)
Well just thinking out loud. ;D
Any other idea's just keep them coming. ;D :)

Thanks everyone for your quick help. :)
I have another question?
I will rent a SUV from here in New Jersey from Hertz and drive to their drop off point in Winchester,VA it then says 13.1 miles to Front Royal on 522.
My question is this is it safe to ride down 522 into Front Royal or should I look for a shuttle/cab service or another route to Front Royal?
I want to start my ride on Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah's  :-\
As usual thank you for your time. :)
