Gear Talk / all weight in the rear ?
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:46:51 am »
Hi everyone, :)
I have search the forums for this subject and can't seem to find what I am looking for.
Please forgive me if it is listed and I didn't find it. I have a 2008 Fuji touring bike and have just bought the Ortileb  Back-Roller Classic pair and wanted to know if it's OK just to run all the weight in the back and not run front rack and Pannier's ? I will run no more then around 35 to 40 pounds total for touring and just wanted to go with the back rack and set of Pannier's and rack bag.
I run Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase front and back and love them 700x32 and also have had custom wheels made the Mavic A-719 so is this doable can I get away with this set up ?
Than you all for your help and suggestions it is very much appreciated.

Gear Talk / Lone Peak Pannier Question
« on: May 10, 2010, 05:22:12 pm »
I was looking at the Lone Peak Parley's Summit Pannier at 2000 cui and was wondering if anyone has used these Pannier's for touring ? http://www.lonepeakpacks.com/
How do the Pannier's hold up and could I use these for both front and back Pannier's to give me a total of 4000 cui. of carrying space ?
I have a 2008 Fuji touring bike and I am looking to start touring this year.
First Tour 284 miles then the next tour will be app. 590 miles all self contained.
I also have Thur-hiked the Appalachian Trail with a 3800 cui. pack with 5 days worth of food and 2 liters of water for a combined weight of app. 33 to 38 pounds.
I know this is not hiking and bicycle touring so that is why I am asking for your help and it would be much appreciated and thank you for your time. :)

You might ask the car rental place if they can pick the vehicle up at your destimation, or provide a driver to drop you off.

good idea and thanks. ;D

furiousapathy - thank you for your reply and this gives me another idea. ;)
I could book a room in Front Royal drive there drop off the bike then drive back to drop off the car and get a cab.
Or maybe find a cab that has an SUV so I could drop off the car then ride into Front Royal. :-\ ::)
Well just thinking out loud. ;D
Any other idea's just keep them coming. ;D :)

Thanks everyone for your quick help. :)
I have another question?
I will rent a SUV from here in New Jersey from Hertz and drive to their drop off point in Winchester,VA it then says 13.1 miles to Front Royal on 522.
My question is this is it safe to ride down 522 into Front Royal or should I look for a shuttle/cab service or another route to Front Royal?
I want to start my ride on Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah's  :-\
As usual thank you for your time. :)

Did you ever end up doing this route? I'm thinking about doing it in the fall sometime (I live in central NJ) and it would be my first multi-day unsupported ride.

Routes / Bicycle Across New Jersey ?
« on: April 29, 2009, 09:38:08 am »
Hello everyone,
My first post here I think, well anyway I would like to know if anyone here has done the bicycle across New Jersey from Hight Point to Cap May 234 miles?
I would appreciate and information I can get my hands on,campsites, hotels.motels, food stops, road conditions etc:
I am thinking of attempting this trip in a few weeks.
Also if anyone would like to go with me let me know I am planning about 5 or 6 days this is my first long tour and I still need to get a front rack and Panniers.
Thank you for your time.  :)
