Frank's Long Way Home Tour
« on: October 22, 2007, 03:30:36 pm »
Hi,
This is Frankie, I m from china and currently living in UK, doing my PHD degree, as I m going to finish my thesis next year, I got a plan to ride home all the way from europe to China. Though I have been riding bikes for quite a long time and have been to several bike tours, but they are all short tours and none of them is expedition style tour, as I just started plan this trip, the whole idea is a bit too big for me at the moment, the exact departure date and trip route have not been decided, as I m at very early stage of planning....advices, ideas and helps of all aspects are welcome.

And more importantly, If anyone is thinking of doing a similar tour, I m more than happy to join, please email me on jaxxhope@hotmail.com...

Cheers

yeah...the best way to get home....I wish evreyone can join the ride....I ve been doing research on visas...well...it seems central asia countries especially Turkmenistan are very tough on giving tourist visas....well, I think it is still doable through travel agency over there...but, not sure if I have to book hotel, transportation, etc as well....if that is the case....how am I going to travel by bike?....Plus, dont even know if I should mention "traveling by bike" at tall, as they may hate bikes....anyone here familiar with visa application procedures of these countries? or had experiences riding in these countries ?..How did those guys ride in countries where even getting a visa require fixed route, form of transportation....................god...............and what about Iran? do they like bikes? Shell I mention I m going to ride through when applying for Iranian visa?................Help and advices will be appreciates.....I promise for endless supply of finest beer for anyone who get me out of this visa chaos ...

I ve never been in any of these countries, and no real idea. But I guess for the tricky central asian countries it might be best just to cycle to the border and get the visas there. Having faith that border officials will be impressed by your ride and won't cause to much trouble... and otherwise a bribe might help...

I guess you need to ask someone who as already done such a ride, however I doubt there are to many around...

Hi Frankie,

Check out this journal at the crazyguyonabike site about a Malaysian guy biking home from the US after his graduate studies via UK, Europe, Turkey, Iran, China. I believe he has just reached China.

Just think, you will be doing just a portion of his trip when you are ready! Good luck.

Thats an amazing tour..one that will most certainly change your life. I've never undertaken anything even remotely like that but I've read several accounts where it was extremely encouraged to carry packs of cigarettes for bribes.

Good luck!!

And make sure you are ready and willing to keep a detailed journal.
