Has anyone used City Navigator as a base map on a ACA route ? Can you just " scroll ahead" and see what  hotels campgrounds and restaurants are coming up ?

Yes you can, but likely you do not want to:

  • Display is extremely slow, depending on zoom level, taking close to 10–30 seconds from one screen to the next.
  • For the services built into the map, you have to zoom in a very small scale to see them, which makes it even more time consuming to move a reasonable distance along the route. Alternatively, you can search for such services, but then you cannot see where they are along your route.
  • Other services are provided when you purchase digital maps from Adventure Cycling. However, depending on your GPS device, especially the Garmin Edge series, do not fit all the service points in their memory.

That leaves you with two better options for services along the route: paper maps & smart phones.

I have a Garmin Montana 600 with 3 Gb internal memory and a micro sd card - wouldn't the city navigator come on a micro sd card ? I also will use smart phone but thought that since no cell phone / wifi is needed for gps I could see what services were available especially in towns that weren't included in the ACA map ( which I will also have )

You should test the Montana while you have it: can you browse the maps easily? Does it perform in a satisfactory way for you?

Both apps recommended for mobile devices allow you to store maps for off line use without the need for data links.

My suggestion will be to:

This gives you a route on two devices for backup, while spending less money.
