Start the Trans Am in Florence, OR
« on: January 19, 2024, 09:36:46 pm »
Hi,

I'm waiting for my TransAm maps 1,2,3 to show up, but can't stop thinking about the trip!  So, if I ride from the Pacific to Missoula, I'll have finished the Trans Am.  I'm thinking about switching directions and going from Florence to Missoula.

Does the road from Florence to Eugene have a shoulder?  Is Florence a good starting place?  or is it better to start in Missoula?  I thought it would be nice to have the road companions along the way if I started at the beginning of the trail.

Thanks to you.

If you follow the map and don’t try to take a shortcut on hwy 126 you will be fine.  Shoulder and low traffic road. I rode it on Memorial Day weekend and it was still fine.

I have never cycled on 126 but have driven it many times by car and it is a fast, high traffic road.  I would stick with the meandering road through Swisshome and to Triangle lake etc.

Highway 126 from Florence to the turnoff to hwy 36 the shoulder is very wide.

Read the post again so I’ll add a comment. Regarding “is Florence a good place to start” I did and thought it was great but I have family in Eugene so easy to get a ride over to the coast. I was familiar with the area and I had a built in stopping place the second night.

I didn’t see any other TransAm riders until I was on the McKenzie pass rd close to the summit. I believe he and the others I saw that day and the next in Sisters had all started in Astoria.

If you haven’t spent time on the Oregon coast and you have the time I’d recommend the Astoria start tho. It’s beautiful.
