Insurance for U.S. trip
« on: November 22, 2011, 06:27:35 am »
Hi again, got two questions going at the moment  :-[

Ok, quick question.  I need insurance for my cycling trip next year across the US.  If there are any UK'ers on here and have bought insurance for your trip, who did you use and what did you think of the cover?  Thanks again

I went with Bell Insurance, but I would advise compare the market or some other price comparison website just to get the best deal.

I have used Ensleigh for both cycling and motorcycle trips and have read on other forums that the post office travel insurance is pretty good for longer trips, most travel insurance policies cover cycling as long as you are not racing. Fortunately no experience of having to claim so cannot advise here.

ok thanks guys.  A lot of the companies I've come across are either charging a fortunce for it, like £200-£300, or I don't feel that the policies would cover me enough ie they are just general travel Insurance.  Will check Ensleigh, I tihnk i insured my bike with them for London

Presumably you are talking mainly about health insurance. Insuring the bicycle is often not worth the price--just keep an eye on it. The TransAm is almost exclusively through very low crime areas. Most people along the route don't even lock their houses, and some leave the keys in their car.

I have a credit card that covers medical insurance when I travel outside Canada, do they have the same thing in the UK? They charge me a hundred bucks a year, but the card also has other benefits and rewards points that are good for travel, so I've easily earned back that fee several times over.

Not sure about the CC thing.  Its just the medical stuff incase a coal truck gets me, or a bear or a dog in Kentucky lol

Have you looked into a card with Avios? Seems like they have reasonable rates and cover cycling.

Cyclists Touring Club would be my recommendation,

http://www.ctc.org.uk/ is the main page.   Lots of resources and plenty of useful discounts.

http://www.citybond.co.uk/?refid=CTIN01   This is the company that they recommend.
