100 dollar bills too large?

Traveling with $2,000 in cash is not a good idea. $100 bills or $20's still not a good idea. Get an ATM card, use it.

I'm with the OP on bulkiness; my experience is that over about 10-15 bills, of any denomination, makes my wallet stiff and difficult to bend.

I would say +1 on the bulkiness except for the "wallet" part of the comment.  Most of the stuff in my wallet stays home making a wallet a bit of overkill.  It never occurred to me to take a wallet even before I started traveling lighter.  I figure that wallets, keys, and so on are best left home.  On my TA I used a small heavy duty ziploc bag and more recently a very small pocket in my tiny camera bag.

Go to bicyclegifts.com and get one of those plastic wallets you can hang around your neck.  That's the only wallet I use for trips of any kind--harder to steal and you don't sit on it all the time.  Disclosure--no, I have no affiliation with the website mentioned except as a customer!

Smaller places won't take even $50's.  One option might be to go to a large store, ie walmart, and purchase a mastercard or visa gift card to use for most of the purchases.
