June Curry aka Cookie Lady

I rode the TransAm in 2010 and stayed at The Cookie Lady's place in Afton. When I got there she had just recently gotten very sick or injured. I felt terrible for her, and unfortunately did not get to meet her although a friend/neighbor/caretaker let me and some fellow tourers stay in the Bikecentennial 'museum'. If you've been there you know how amazing this place is!

Anyway, I have been looking around the web and haven't found anything about June Curry in the last year or two, and would love to know if she has recovered and if so how she's doing these days. Also, just out of curiosity, if anyone has recent photos of the 'museum' to see if I can spot what we left there.

Hi there,

We generally hear from the June or her care person in the spring to let us know how she's doing and what the plan is for the Bike House and Museum. Likely, someone on staff will do a blog post or something once we have the information. There are some pictures on Flickr of other's experiences but I don't recall how current they are.

June Curry is 90 now and has health and financial concerns.  For decades she has opened her home to thousands of strangers - sweaty, smelly cyclists huffing and puffing up the hill.  And she never asked for anything but a photo.

Now, we can return a small portion of her generosity.  The Mile Post Zero cycling club of Waynesboro, Virginia has raised funds to help June stay in her house and to cover some of her expenses.  Here is their website:
