Favorite Eating Spots
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:02:58 pm »
I was leaving for a cross country tour this summer.  My route will follow the northern tier to Glacier goes south to Yellowstone, then west across South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, across the ferry to Michigan, takes The Eerie Connector to buffalo and follows the Eerie Canal trail to Albany from which I ride to NYC.  I was wondering if anyone remembers some great places to eat (restaurants, Deli's or anything good) anywhere along this route.
Thanks

You beat me to it. We were there in '09. Pie and everything else was great.

Between Eureka and Whitefish, MT there is a town called Olney. There is an old store just off route about .25 miles. (Follow the blue sign pointing to Olney.) The food wasn't anything to write home about, but the place is neat. Among other things, it has a large collection of old pop bottles.

More specifics on the route would help people.  E.g., How are you getting from Glacier to Yellowstone?

BTW...If you are going to be in Buffalo, the NT route into Niagara Falls, ON and then back into the U.S. and to the Erie Canal at Lockport is worth it.

Thanks I'm still figuring out the route through NY so that's a great help.
I will be taking U.S. 89 from Glacier to Yellowstone.
Thanks

In Utica NY:
Joey's Restaurant
815 Mohawk St
Utica, NY 13501
Be sure to get the greens with meat. Wowza! If there is a seafood special that day, order that too.

In NYC:
New Wonton Garden
56 Mott St
Manhattan, NY 10013
Seriously the best wonton soup ever. Get the noodles with wonton. Add tendon, beef, or tripe if you like them. How good is this place? When I lived in VT, I would drive eight hours to NYC just to get soup, turn around and go home.  It's that good.

On the NT in Washington, the food co-op in Tonakset (in the Okanogan Valley) was definitely an oasis.

And it's right on route!

Guadalajara Mexican Food in South Dakota.  I ate in Pierre but it looks like they have one in Brookings and Spearfish as well.  The food was very good but the "soapapilla" was  :o  Served on a pizza pan and featured chocolate syrup, honey, whipped cream and cinnamon!

You should really take a hard look at your route and detour through Ontario and stop at Slickers Ice Cream in Broomfield :)  Top it off with some amazing desert from the bakery across the street.  While you are in town, Broomfield Bike shop is a fun place-they don't charge tourers on labor for repairs.

If you want to eat at places that have been featured in TV shows like "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" or "Man vs. Food", check out www.tvfoodmaps.com . You can plug in a road trip route and places that are near or along your itinerary will show up on the map.
