Atlantic Coast Route to Hermon, ME
« on: December 26, 2011, 04:29:58 pm »
I want to ride from Baltimore, MD to Hermon, ME in the late spring. Fortunately for me, the Atlantic Coast Route works great for that. But I don't know the roads in ME. I could take Rte 1A from Stockton Springs to the Hampden area, then pick up Coldbrook Rd to Hermon. Google bike seems to prefer smaller streets starting at Winterport. Or I could shoot up a series of back roads from Belfast. Is one of these better? Is there anything that's important to avoid?

Hi there,

You might want to check with the Maine DOT and see how your ideas line up with theirs for routing:

Might shoot a PM to "Sailariel" who is a member here who is from Belfast..

Maine DOT used to publish a bike suitability map for the entire state, not like local street detail but county road detail that was a good map. It listed traffic density and shoulder width. I've used it to get to places off the Atlantic Coastal route before.   I don't think the Maine DOT publishes it anymore but it was a good free resource and the price was right!
