A new bridge is being built over the Ohio River from Madison, IN to Milton. KY. You can follow the projects progress at: http://www.miltonmadisonbridge.com/

At this time a 5 day closure is planned for April 25–29. These dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions and river levels. A second 5 day closure is likely to occur in the Fall. You will not be able to cross the river in either direction at Madison or Milton during the closures. A detour has been recommended by a local cyclist.

Northbound on map 35:
0(0 km)Continue straight (east) on SR 56. 20(32)Vevay. Route becomes SR 156. * 26(42)Turn left onto SR 101. Cross Ohio River, enter Kentucky. Route becomes SR 1039. * 33.5(54)Ride over I-71. SR 1039 curves left. Turn right onto Boone Rd./SR 465. * 35(56)Turn right onto Sparta Pike/SR 35. 37(59)Sparta. Rejoin route on map 36.

Southbound on map 36:
* 20.5(33)Sparta. Turn right onto Sparta Pike/SR 35. * 22.5(36)Turn left onto Boone Rd/SR 465. * 24(39)Turn left onto SR 1039. Ride over I-71. * 31.5(51)Cross Ohio River, enter Indiana. Turn right onto SR 156. 37.5(60)Vevay. Route becomes SR 56. 57.5(92)Madison. Rejoin route on map 35.

NOTE: SR 56 is not in great shape -- it is broken in places and there is no shoulder -- and you will be sharing it with 55 mph traffic. Ride with caution.

Julie, maybe I'm confused, but I thought Kentucky was south of the Ohio River, and Indiana north?

That is accurate. The river is running east-west at this point. The direction of travel on these two particular panels (35 & 36) is east-west but the overall direction of travel for the Underground Railroad maps is north-south, hence the narratives are noted as northbound and southbound. It probably sounds more confusing than it is, if you saw the panel it would make more sense. Does that help?
