Feedback on new product idea
« on: April 02, 2012, 03:58:44 pm »
I'm looking for feedback, criticism, ideas, input, or whatever you have to offer on a product idea we had for stealth camping. We want to produce lightweight; camouflaged rain fly's, hammock tarps, and bike/gear covers... Something you could throw over your existing gear to conceal it better. We would like to provide a blackout material so your shelter doesnt light up while reading after dark.

Does anyone currently use camo tarps?
What do you like about them?
what could be improved?

I know I would rather have a tarp with digital camo print, instead of yellow or even green. But I want to know if I'm the only one that would bother packing along something like that?

Its not really a new idea, but I believe there is improvements we could make to provide better tarps and rainfly's for stealth camping.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions

If a "camo" option was available on the gear I have now I would have chosen it over the colors I have. (tan/green tent & burnt orange nysil tarp). I am sure I would not would carry an additional piece to cover the existing gear just to be that much more stealthy. My nysil tarp is nowhere big enough to cover my bike and tent, its just a kitchen shelter/shade.
In a bit of mental turmoil if I would want to part with the reflective guy lines I replaced my rain fly tie outs with. Tough choice between peace of mind in being stealthy ~vs~ 3 am faceplant prevention.

Been done.  Any outdoor shop that caters to hunters, particularly goose and duck hunters, has camouflage tarps, shelters, blinds etc. in a bewildering variety of patterns.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your feedback.

So you carry a tent for sleeping and a tarp for the kitchen/shade?
What if the camo rainfly could replace your current tent rain fly?
Would the blackout material be beneficial, so you could use a flashlight to read or (insert activity) before bed?

PS. I checked out your blog, that is a nice bike! I like the color and accessories you have added :)

I carry a Big Agnes Lynx Pass 3 Tent and the fly is ,like most, very form fitting and can be used with just the ground cloth if needed so any replacement for the fly would have to be of a suitable shape to accomplish those tasks as well.
I carry a 6x8 nysil tarp, exceptionally light and packs small but is still amazingly waterproof, I think that would be the likely candidate for replacing with a camo tarp.
The blackout material is an interesting idea, for my lifestyle I would not need it, I'm usually asleep/exhausted quite early and in the morning I would be removing it almost immediately and using the flashlight to begin pack-up . I generally try to roll out on or before civil twilight.
