Status of detour around Williston ND aera?
« on: March 08, 2012, 03:57:57 pm »
Hello All,
I'm riding the NTR east to west this spring and was wondering if any decent routes have been developed around the Williston oil boom area. I've recently seen some news stories and a CNBC show on the oil boom and frankly I'm terrified to go near that area. I know those hard working oil field workers need to blow off steam after weeks of 12 hour days but I don't want to be sharing the road with them.
Any thoughts to detouring due west out of the St Paul MN area and in to South Dakota? Then what?
Thanks
Ed

This blog tells the status of what we're doing to change the routing in North Dakota. Northern Tier map sections 3 and 4 will be available in May.

Looks like the new route will go past Fort Mandan. Definitely worth a stop. Rode into and out of Bismark on CANDISC in '06. While it's a large city by ND standards and has more traffic than most places in the state, it wasn't bad, IMO.

No, it bypasses Fort Mandan - which is outside of Washburn, not Bismarck.
It's about 40 miles north via the old L & C Route.
Both the NT and the L & C should include the segment Stanton to Washburn.
