Houston to El Paso - quickest route - part of East to West

Hello all,

My friend and I startig in Jackonsville to San Diego and are basing our route on the southern tier. We seem pretty much there except for the bit between Beaumont east of Houston and El Paso. Wondered if you could help?

I need to find the quickest route unfortunatley.

I am thinking of going north of texas via humble and on to 290 via Hempsted, Giddings, (not sure best route to get through to 29 to Burnet) Llano, then on the 190 to Iraan then either the 10 and (as suggested in another post) change onto the tx20 to El Paso or 190 at Iraan and go via smaller roads to Pecos.

What do you think?

All help much appreciated, we will be there around middle of October.

I need to find the quickest route unfortunatley.

You could just do I-90 or I-10 all the way.  Personally they both were OK IMO, at least for the parts that I rode them.

Warning...  The big exception is Houston which was pretty awful on I-10, I would definitely avoid that if doing it again.

Thanks a lot, we were definately thinking of avoiding Houston, trying to circumvent it northwards via humble or Conroe, not sure just yet. Thanks for the tips.

Looking at taking the 290(north west of Houston) - 29 (towards Eldorado) and then 190 towards Pecos.

I have heard so many bad things about bicycling through Houston that I always avoid it by swinging south and bicycling along the Galveston waterfront. This is a beautiful ride - miles and miles of wide esplanade along the ocean. I recommend it highly. You also get the relaxing ferry ride east of town.

The Beaumont/Port Arthur area is difficult, congested bicycling. You might want to buy a county map to help you pick your way through the area.
