You don't say which "route" your are referring to.  If it is the ACA Atlantic Coast route, I rode from Bar Harbor down to Boston mostly on that route. It mostly stayed off main roads and I don't recall much traffic except on roads with good shoulders.

You can read all about this ride in my journal where you can see hundreds of photos of this route.  I actually rode through Bucksport twice!

yes I meant that ACA route. Would be doing it in mid-August. I read elsewhere that it was mainly following route one with a lot of heavy traffic - would be going to Penebscot Bay from Boston. Maybe it will not be that crowded

Dunno where "elsewhere" is, but its inhabitants are either misinformed or misleading you. ACA takes secondary roads in the US 1 corridor with occasional short stretches on US 1 to jump from one small road to another, notably around Waldoboro and Ogunquit. Eyeballing the map, I'd say it's 4% on US 1.

the pictures are great..am debating whether to do the last leg of the Northern Tier or the last leg of the Atlantic coast tour to get to Maine. Would prefer the least traffic
