Atlantic coast versus Northern Tier to Maine

I am headed to Penebscot bay and could to the last leg of either of these routes to get there. Obviously one is much more hilly.. am looking for the least traffic. Has anyone here done both routes...how would the traffic be in the the White Mtns in August, and how are the roads in Maine?

Starting in Boston would be much easier than coming from the East-- both would have their advantages-- if anyone has done both I would be interested in hearing from you.
