Help. needed in Elma Washington
« on: June 23, 2012, 06:33:41 pm »
Hi - we are on tnd ran into a tire problem.  Somehow, my wife's 650 X 35 ripped near the bead and is ruined.  The dollar bill trick won't work and we need a new tire.  Elma has no bike shops or any source of tires.  Looks like I am riding to Centralia and back (round trip 70 miles) unless someone can think of a better solution.

Again, I apologize if I used the wrong forum.

I was just in Centralia, and I think their bike shop is closed. You'll have better luck in Olympia, many bike shops and a better shot of finding a 650 tire there.

If the tire is ripped near the bead I can't think of any other solution than getting a new tire.

Probably too late, but call a shop or go on the Internet and have it overnighted. Instead of riding 70 miles, take a day off.

If there is an awl available, I have seen a tire stitched back to the bead well enough to ride for a day or two.

Thanks for the feedback.  It turns out that Terry, owner of the Lavogue Bicycle and Apparel Bike shop in Aberdeen borrowed a car and met me half way.  The little town of Montesara was only 11 miles away with nice wide shoulders.  An unloaded Surly can fly!

Terry is a great guy!!!!!!!!!!

Pat, great to hear! And also good to hear that there is a bike shop in Aberdeen. I know the actual Washington Coast is pretty sparse on those. Other than going north to Port Angeles, there really isn't much out there. I've heard there is one in Forks but it wasn't open when I went by a few years ago and it didn't seem like it had official hours.

We made use of the LaVogue Bike Shop in 2009 (it helps to remember to stock your patch kit . . .). It is actually in Hoquiam, across the river. It is well stocked and at the least, an interesting place.

Just to close this out, it seems there are no real bike shops.in Centralia, either.  Willie's sells a little bike stuff, but cannot assist in bike repairs.  The other bike shop referenced in the GPX file is gone.  The bike gear sign should be removed from the ACA maps (if it hasn't already happened and I just missednit).

Anyway, thanks for the help!!!!!
