Eureka MT. to Helena, MT. days?
« on: November 13, 2012, 05:25:46 pm »
I am planning on doing the great divide route from Eureka MT. to Helena MT. summer of 2013.  Anyone have some insight on how long (in days) this would take for an avid fit cyclist?

It's 360 miles from Eureka to Helena on the Great Divide. If you can ride 40 mi./day on a loaded mtn. bike or pulling a trailer it'll take 9 days. You might want to have a rest day in there somewhere. But you should also plan on where your overnights will be so that will affect your daily mileage. There's 7 passes to go over and the route is fairly hilly so I would suggest underestimating your mileage instead of overestimating.

It took me 11 days to complete that section. I followed McCoy's book. It was tough, much tougher than last summer's route from Helena to Flagg Ranch.

I am a fit, 64 yrs old cyclist. It took me 6 days; two rather short days with only 3-4 hrs cycling and four days with 7-10 hrs in the saddle.
