StargazerSol, I know that your questions here deal with equipment. But in your original post, which is now gone, you laid out your route and time of departure. Maybe you could post a question in Routes about that route and whether beginning an incredibly long first tour on the Northern Tier in January is a good idea or even possible. You should include your plans for average daily mileage and lodging.

You could receive some very helpful information.

Hi, This Greg again hahaha asking about the my route to go around USA. And I was wondering if its a good idea to take the northern tier route in January or I should leave that for the last part and take the east southern tier route then southern tier route then west northern tier route then northern tier to back where i started?

Thanks for the help

Most people try to avoid snow and ice while touring by bike; you have more pavement (and more room for other traffic to maneuver around you), less worries about sliding and falling, and it's easier to avoid dying from hypothermia in a snowstorm if you plan your trip so that most of your riding is in warmer weather.  Given those reasons, you might want to consider starting on the Southern Tier in January, and keeping the Northern Tier for closer to summer.

I have several questions:
1. Time frame for  the entire tour
2. Your planned average daily mileage
3. Camping or motels
4. Do you have to leave from New York
5. Do you have to start in January

It seems like most people who plan a perimeter tour want to avoid snow as stated before and want to ride south on the Pacific coast.

I plan to do this tour in 5 to 6 months, camping all the way. and yes i do have to leave from NY because that is where my bike is and I have no car to move all of the equipment. I have to start in January so I can be able to go to summer school after this tour my average daily mileage that I want to attain is about 40 to 60 miles

Northern Tier in January is not only inadvisable, it's impossible unless you bring snowshoes and carry your bike on your back across the Rockies and Cascades.

I'm also relatively new to touring and have only been seriously cycling for a couple of years, doing mostly centuries and other single-day rides. In all honesty, your plan sounds extremely ambitious for a new touring rider. The distances alone are daunting, but if I understood correctly, you are planning on crossing the Northern Tier in January with little experience and relatively untested equipment. I live in the middle of the Northern Tier and the weather and road conditions up here can be extremely variable. I ride year-round but there are quite a few days in the winter that I don't venture out. In January we can have anything from 20F and sunny (beautiful for a winter ride if the roads are good) to -40F with a howling blizzard, sometimes in the same weekend. Roads can be perfectly clear and dry or they can be black ice edged with deep frozen ruts, or covered with six inches of snow with drifts several feet high that are impassable until the snow plows go through. There are lots of places where it is 20-30 miles between any kind of town or even several miles to an occupied house. The amount of clothing, gear, and food you will need to safely traverse MT, ND and MN during the winter, even in good weather, will be extensive and cumbersome. I'm not saying it can't be done, but you better know what you are doing.

I would really suggest that you do a couple of overnight or weekend tours with all of your equipment, under the conditions you are considering, before trying something of this magnitude.

Good Luck to you, whatever you decide.
Those who say it can't be done should stand aside for those who are doing it

You might want to consider finding a train or bus to take you south.  If you can get down to, say, the southern end of North Carolina, the incidence of snow decreases quite a lot.

Topic drift This thread started with fairly general questions, but is now discussing routes. I have tried to combine the posts in the Routes forum with partial success. Maybe today's effort will work better.
