You can also make tweaks to your bike such as flipping the stem over and adding spacers (if possible) to raise your handlebars if you have not done so already. That plus the biggest tires it will take will improve comfort a lot on long days in the saddle.

As you, I attempted to use a carbon frame Trek 2100 on my entry into touring. It did not work. I was looking at self-contained and found my Trek was just too light for the job. I have since gotten a Surly Disk Trucker and found this to be a wonderful bike to tour on.

The touring bike is a more relaxed ride and geared more for touring with weight. I could not have been more pleased to go this route.
