Traveling from New York to Bar Harbour with 2 bikes
« on: February 16, 2013, 03:27:55 am »
Hello everyone,

We are a couple from the Netherlands and are planning a bike ride in the US. What we want to do is the Atlantic coast route and start in Bar Harbour. What I can't figure out how to get in Bar Harbour with two bikes without spending a fortune.

For us it means flying form Amsterdam to New York getting in Bar Harbour somehow and peddling back to New York along to coast route. We want to spend some day's in New York and then fly back to Amsterdam. We have three weeks. Is there somebody out there with experience or a suggestion how to travel to Bar Harbour from New York with two bikes.

The nearest city to Bar Harbour with commercial air service is Bangor, Maine and you might be able to get a shuttle flight from New York to there.  Bangor to Bar harbour would be a nice one-day ride of about 45 mi (73 km).  An alternative is to rent a one-way car and drop it off in Bar Harbour.  Or, check to see if there is bus service from the New York airport you are flying into (Kennedy?) to Bar Harbour or from in the city to Bar Harbour.

Given you will have two bikes with you, the rental car may be the easiest way to do it.

Did a quick search. Avis Rental Car allows one way to the Bangor, ME airport. Rate depends on car size and time of year. Interestingly, their web site asks for home country. Unless I missed something, Holland/Netherlands is not listed.

Rental car would be my first choice, one-way from New York to Bar Harbor. I know Hertz has a location at the Bar Harbor Airport, which is on the mainland between Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. It's a long drive, though, figure a full, long day.

There is regularly scheduled commercial air service to Bar Harbor airport (BHB), but it is small commuter planes and I'm not sure if they have room for bikes or not. They code share with US Airways out of Boston. Jet service is to Bangor airport (BGR) and I believe there are regular shuttles from there to Bar Harbor. I'm not a huge US Airways fan, but they do have some convenient connections to Maine via Philadelphia. You could fly AMS-PHL-BGR and then bike to Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert Island from Bangor, as DaveB suggested. Ride to NYC, spend a few days there, then take the train (AMTRAK) back to Philadelphia and fly home.
