Rent a bike for multiple days?
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:38:56 pm »
Hey, I'm based in Washington DC and want to go on a week-long bike tour (or so). I currently get around on my road bike, but I don't think it's durable enough to make it far in non-paved terrain, especially carrying panniers. Is it possible to rent a more durable bike for several days in a row?

Renting a mountain bike should be easy, and you can certainly tour on a mountain bike. Renting a real touring bike will probably be next to impossible, but it doesn't hurt to call some bike shops and ask. Renting a cross bike would be somewhere in between the two, in both functionality and probability.

Renting racks--probably a long shot. Renting a trailer--maybe. Renting panniers--a very long shot. You might have to buy or borrow this stuff. There are a lot of trailers sitting around collecting dust in garages.

Check out Big Wheel Bikes in Georgetown.  They rent mountain bikes, hybrid bikes and road bikes by the day, week, or month.
