OCD bike tech and extra spare parts?
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:11:49 pm »
I have been doing overnights and weekend type trips so far and am learning that less is more the hard way. Standard newbie approach. However my first big trip down the Pacific coast is coming up at the end of Summer and I still have a problem...
I feel the need to carry parts and tools for most foreseeable issues that I or maybe someone else may have. Yes I'm the guy that not only will I give you the parts, if you let me I'll fix it for you. I could be wrong, but I want to see it done right and I think I can do it faster. Feel free to laugh away!
Some things are easy:
Cleat screws instead of whole replacement cleats. I can buy new ones when needed.
Fiber-spoke, instead of each spoke length and a hyper cracker.
One brake, and one shift cable instead of a full set of spares.

Other things I'm still trying to work out:
Universal emergency dérailleur hanger.
Spare tire as opposed to just a couple of tire boots.
Valve hole adapters Schrader to Presta.
Master links or pins for each different chain.
More tube patches than a sag wagon. I may not have your size tube, but I can fix it.
I know that there are a couple of other things that have escaped me at the moment... On one hand, I know I should keep shaving the weight. On the other, it's like trail karma and hopefully if I bring it I won't need it.
So... am I crazy, or would you be happy to see me roll up?

Many experienced bicycle tourists are already carrying most of what you list. Except for the spare tire, all the items on your list are fairly light. But if you had something that I did not and needed, then certainly I'd be very happy to see you.

A couple of possible considerations for a long trip:

Add a small squeeze bottle of chain lube that can also be used for pivot points like derailleur and brake pivots.
Check to be sure your patch kit cement tubes are still good as they tend to dry out over time.  Perhaps substitute Park's GP-2 glueless patches.

How many spare tires are you willing to take if your party has bikes with significantly different wheels, say both 700c and 26"?

Dave's- I forgot to mention the pen sized Pro Gold lube with the metal needle tip, I keep it in a cigar tube. As for the tires... I figured one folding bead tire wrapped around the rear hub of my wife and my bikes. Both are Novara Safari, however hers is athe small frame with 26". I am now considering just going with tire boots. I also forgot to add an assortment of rack hardware. I'll also be getting new tubes of patch glue just before I leave. I have heard somewhere that many of the glueless patches are water soluble, and I know that glueing works.

The glueless patches (Park brand) are not permanent.  They work for a week or two and then leak air.  So do not count on glueless patches fixing a hole in your tube permanently.  They are temporary patches.

When touring I carry a spare tire.  Plus tire boots in the saddlebag.  On at least one occassion I had a tire blowout and it could nto be booted.  I think the bead gave way and the tire would not stay mounted anymore.  So a new tire was the only choice.  Carrying boots and a spare tire is wise.

I'd suggest using thread locker on bolts and screws on your bike.  May not need spare bolts or screws if you use thread locker.  Thread locker keeps bolts in place.

Rear derailleur hanger?  I suppose since your wife and you have the same bike then its easy to take a spare hanger.  But otherwise, skip it.  You can always rig the bike up single speed if the hanger breaks.  Assume you have a chain tool in your kit to shorten the chain and make it single speed length.

The first generation Park GP-1 patches certainly were temporary, sometimes lasting only a few miles.  I had terrible luck with them and gave up on the idea.  The new generation GP-2 parches have gotten mixed but far more favorable reviews.  Applied properly many users say they outlast the tube. YMMV.
