Route help needed from Ashland, OR to Shasta

Can anyone tell me an alternative route to get South from Ashland.  From everything I can see, I have to ride the I-5 for 18 miles or so.   That does not sound pleasant.  Any advice would be very appreciated.

OR 66 to U.S. 97 to Weed then College & N. Old Stage Rds.

Interstate riding, while often not pleasant, is sometimes a necessary evil, at least if you want a direct route. I rode some busy parts of I-90 in MT and a stretch of I-80 in WY and lived.

I used to live in Ashland. You can use old Hwy 99 to get to the top of Siskiyou summit and then down the other side toward CA border. Then you can work some of the side roads with a small strecth on I-5 I believe. Cycle Oregon 2009 rode into CA over Siskiyou pass this way. I've tried to find a copy of the route on line - but my work access to the WWW is pretty limited. If you can find the Cycle Oregon map for 2009 - you should be on the right path.

Thanks y'all!  That's exactly what I needed.  I can handle 10 miles on the interstate, especially when it's all down hill.

If you ride the Sierra Cascades section 3 route from Ashland to Shasta, it's only 7 miles in I-5. =)
