First Multi-Day BikeTour
« on: April 07, 2014, 08:34:33 pm »
Hello, I am planning on doing a portion of Adventure Cycling Association's Underground Railroad Bicycle Tour Route from Louisville,KY. to Xenia,Ohio, next month. I am a 63 male diabetic cyclist, is a pancreatic cancer survivor who for the past coupe of years competed in several triathlons.  However, since there is new bridge construction over the Ohio River in Louisville the local tri's will not take place; so this year I have change my cyclist focus to include touring.

A couple of years ago I did a 200 mile supported weekend tour which was a blast. But this year I am undertakking a solo self contained tour.  Any Suggestions?????

Thanks

You didn't really ask any specific question so I'll make some general suggestions.  For me the following is the recipe for a good tour:
1. Pack light.
2. Budget more time and money than you actually need.
3. Eat well.
4. Talk to the local folks.
5. Have fun.

You mentioned diabetes.  I am unsure if you have Type 1 or Type 2.  Based on the pancreas cancer, I am assuming Type 1.  Diabetes adds some complexity to bike riding and touring.  But does not prevent it or hinder it much at all.  You will need to keep track of your blood sugars during the ride.  Carry a blood glucose meter with you and use it every hour or two.  Carry food, snacks, candy, etc.  And eat them.

You may want to include Yellow Springs in your trip. It's only 8 miles north of Xenia, and is a really neat little town, with some good bars and restaurants. Also the home of David Chappelle who frequents (and owns) some of the downtown area. You won't be disappointed in the Little Miami Trail. There are some nice campgrounds right on the river.

Not that I know everything about Diabetes, but I lived with a Father whom had Type 1 and had a good friend also with type 1.  My only suggestion would be to take someone with you.  I am sure you know how to take care of yourself, but there is always a chance that things will go wrong.....
