A question on clothes. I'm referring to this list here - http://www.reddit.com/r/bicycletouring/comments/18xd0v/bare_essentials_for_touring/ - and I'm wondering about what is meant by the shirts and shorts.

Should I be wearing jerseys while touring, or is it better to find something simpler?
Should I pack a long-sleeve shirt and pants in addition to short-sleeve shirts and shorts?
Should the undershirts be cotton or synthetic?

Also, will using full-finger gloves be annoying for summer touring?

Thanks for the help, y'all. I've been really appreciating the feedback :D

Personally, I always carry a pair of the yellow leather work gloves like the type you would purchase at Home Depot or Lowes. They come in handy when building campfires or doing a messy repair job on the bike. If it's cool in the morning they can be worn for warmth and can be worn on the bicycle if needed for warmth as well. I never regret having them and I have some envious looks from my companions after finishing a dirty job and my hands are clean.

Depending on where you are, "summer" can be pretty damn cold. Clothing choices should be made based on expected weather for when and where you will be. No blanket advice applies.

$1994.00  I believe I can do the same for $300.00 with almost identical functionality. For one small example, you need  hundred-dollar pedals like you need a hole in the head. $25.00 pedals will get you there just fine, no problem. An $18.00 seat in Wally's is almost identical to the expensive ones and just as good. A $30.00 Shimano derailleur will get you across the continent and a great deal farther. Why the camel back? I have cycled 37,000 miles around the world. I've never had a problem reaching down to the bottle and getting a swig. Tires and wheels are things you do not want to scrimp on. Cables and housings can be had in Wally's for $10.00. I have gone on very long, heavily loaded, tours over extremely hilly and mountainous terrains without the first problem with such cables. Those are just a few examples.

I have always said, within certain limits you can spend as much or as little as you want on bicycle touring.

Some people swear by their Leatherman, but before you buy and carry one, ask yourself exactly what maintenance on the bike requires one. Very little to none. Yea, sure, there are some theoretical things you might do with it, but most are unlikely and you can figure out other ways to do those things.
+1  the Leatherman and it's copies are both heavy and have a lot of unnecessary tools for bike travel.  A middle range Swiss Army Knife will have all of the useful tools (knife, small screwdriver, scissors, and even the essential corkscrew.) with much less bulk and weight.

I use a Leatherman Juice S2.  I've used every single tool in it more than once.  The reason I don't use Swiss Army Knife is that it is hard to find one with pliers and I don't need a corkscrew!
