Route 66 Companion, August
« on: June 28, 2013, 03:20:53 am »
Hey everyone,

I'm biking LA to Chicago, following Route 66. My plan is to start at the begininning of August and finish within 2 months. I'm new to touring, and would love a companion (even if for only for part) of the trip. I am looking to camp mostly, as well as find friendly folks to stay with.

Let me know if you're interested, and I can be flexible to your schedule and goals too!

About me: I'm a recent college grad, heading home.

Thanks.

Congrats on graduating!  You do know it's going to be like the surface of the sun once you get in the Mojave Desert?  I've ridden much of 66 between Barstow, CA, and Ashfork, AZ, but I did it once in Dec. and once in Nov.  Unless you are prepared for serious baking misery, I'd suggest a different time or different route.  If you go, consider having the cash for motels at night and starting super dark early to get in miles.  You can ride late, too, but there will not be much shade for hanging out during the day.  I wish you all the best, but do be prepared for 100+ temps.

Hey Scott,

Good point. I've been considering riding evenings/nights/early mornings with lights & reflective gear, and resting during the day. I am fairly concerned about that section. I suppose the other option would be to start further east, past the desert...

Thanks for the heads-up.
