Help Victoria Island BC
« on: July 06, 2013, 02:59:50 pm »
Hi there!

In a couple of days we take off for a three week trip. Anyone cycled on Vancouver Island and have tips for us what to do? It can be also be other side activities like hiking. We already found like the Goose trail and the lock side but it seems that everything we find of routes are from the southern part.

If there is not enough to do for three weeks we can also go to the Olympic Peninsula off course so tips are also welcome there...

Regards
Bert

You might throw in Salt Spring Island as well. A short ferry ride and nice, mellow roads.

Cycled that area with my wife last June and loved every minute of it. Took ferry from Vancouver to Salt Spring Island which I believe is a must see location then ferried over to Vancouver Island landing in Crofton. Cycled south to Victoria which is also a must visit city. On the way south to Victoria make sure you stop in Cowichan Bay. Very scenic with a one of a kind bakery which in of itself is worth the trip! Also when you choose your route into Victoria avoid the highway to the west as it involves mountains and is very challenging. If you follow the eastern coastal route it puts you on the Galloping Goose Bike Trail which is a convienent way to approach Victoria. We then ferried across to Port Angeles headed east and ended in Seattle.

The bushes beside the bike paths around Victoria are usually dripping with berries in the summer, all free for the taking. I've cycled the length of the island up to Port Hardy and it gets more rustic and quieter as you head north. Past Campbell River, there are no shoulders on the highway but traffic is very light.
