Southern Tier Route in winter???
« on: July 28, 2013, 06:36:50 pm »
I want to do the Southern Tier route in November/December, but I don't know if there are any stretches on this route where there will be snow (or anything else that would keep me from completing my endeavor so late in the season.

Does anyone have any answers, or know how I could find the answer to my question?

Thanks!!

There are three areas that may be potential problems for snow.  You'll have to watch the weather from fronts coming down from Alaska.

The first is in California.  Just east of Alpine you may hit snow if a cold front comes through.  In Arizona as you climb up to Globe is the second spot.  Although these two are unlikely.  The third area is New Mexico just before and after Silver City.  After that you shouldn't get any snow although you may run into some cold weather.

Ok thanks a lot! I'll do some research on those areas and pay attention to the weather patterns when I'm ready to start. I
m planning on going East to West, so I should be able to pay attention as I'm coming up to them.

Check the hours of sunlight. Many cyclists underestimate the daylight hours come December and January in the desert regions of the Southern Tier. The roads are remote, narrow two lanes, with few services for long stretches between Phoenix and San Diego.
I recommend being off the road by 4:00 pm to set up camp or stay with your host.
