TransAm, Section 8, Map 98 - 2013
« on: June 02, 2013, 08:20:19 am »
Hello again! It must seem like we're constantly running into road closures! We're headed westbound and when we crossed US 59 and the road became 160th road, we started noticing signs for a road closure 11 miles along. We thought we would reach our turning just beforehand so we continued. It didn't work. We had to take an earlier right onto Ford Road and it was not ideal. It was an unmade road with loose gravel. Not too bad on a touring bike (though I did take a tumble) but pretty impossible on a road bike. Might be worth seeking a detour earlier on! Good luck! Jana and Tom www.honkforfreedom.com

Jana, sorry about not warning you about that. I worried about missing the opportunity to say something. My wife and I talked with you just before Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any information on the road closure (Elk Rd.) you encountered on the Kansas DOT site (http://511.ksdot.org/KanRoadPublic/Default.aspx) however, Neosho County road department suggested using US 169 which parallels Elk Rd. to get around that closure. I'm not sure if there is access to the Santa Fe Safari Campground via this routing or not.

Hope this helps those following Jana.

Just a warning. 169 is a freeway. If you have good tires the dirt road just east of 169 is okay.

Thanks for the follow up information, Bigger_Al.

Just a warning. 169 is a freeway. If you have good tires the dirt road just east of 169 is okay.

On Google Maps it looks like a two lane highway with shoulders though they appear to be a bit crumbling in places. Imagery is from 2008 so maybe something has change in that time. Thankfully it is only a four mile stretch whichever solution you opt for though.

You'll be on gravel on 160th from 169 to Elk Rd at this point anyway. Douglas/Plummer was safe with compacted gravel. This was even after the flooding rains this past Friday. Also note that in high water you cannot get through on 160th due to a low water bridge. We had to go to Earlton and back to 160th on Elk Rd. I suppose one could easily traverse Ford road north or south to get to and from Chanute.

I talked with Neosho County Road and Bridge Dept. today, and the Elk Rd. construction is now to a point where cyclists can get through.  Road construction is expected to be complete late Sept 2013.
